In an effort to ensure sufficient food supply while the country faces the looming food crisis, and boost production of the countryâs essential food items for the long-term, President Ferdinand R. Marcos met with key officials of the Department of Agriculture on July 18, at the Bureau of Soils and Water Management Convention Hall in Quezon City.
âWe need an immediate plan to ensure that our food supply and the food prices are within reach of ordinary Filipinos from now until the end of the year,â the President and current DA Secretary said.
Undersecretary for Operations and Chief-of-Staff Leocadio Sebastian led the presentation of the agencyâs catch-up operational plan, which will prioritize the production of rice, corn, livestock, poultry, vegetables, and fisheries.
Strategies for other programs such as fertilizer subsidy, urban and peri-urban agriculture, and Kadiwa that will boost food production and improve the mobilization of affordable agri-fishery commodities were also presented.

We are confident this will augur an unprecedented âwhole-of-governmentâ movement for the urgent attainment of food sovereignty in this time of crisis,â Secretary Dar said.

[TECHNOLOGY OF THE WEEK]
To provide rice farmers and pest control officers access to reliable and prompt virus disease diagnostic tool, the DA-Philippine Rice Research Institute and the Central Luzon State University spearheaded the use and optimization of the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay.
LAMP is a simple and inexpensive detection protocol that can provide results within an hour, faster than the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique.
With this, they can immediately mobilize local disease management system and allow protection of standing crops. It will also allow them to avoid crop loss and additional pesticide expenditure and misuse. # # #

More than five million farmers, fishers, and farm workers have to date registered under the national Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) that serves as a major requirement, prioritizing them to receive various assistance from the Department of Agriculture (DA).
âAs of March 8, 2022, we have registered 5,463,735 farmers, fishers, and farm workers, exceeding our target amid the pandemic that restricted movement and physical contact,â said Agriculture Secretary William D. Dar.
âOnce registered, they are given priority in availing of agriculture and fishery assistance in the form of cash or farm inputs like seeds and fertilizers, and fuel subsidy vouchers, and crop insurance, to name a few,â the DA chief added.
The DA has been encouraging all farmers, farm workers/laborers, fisherfolk, including farm youth to register in their respective City or Municipal Agriculture Offices (C/MAOs), where they are assisted in filling out the RSBSA enrolment form, said DA Assistant Secretary for Regional Operations Arnel de Mesa.
