The Department of History of Art at the Institute of Global and Historical Studies organized a panel discussion elucidating the narratives inherent in two iconic artworks: Picasso's "Guernica" and Sadequain's mural. Employing Panofsky's method, an analytical framework renowned for its depth, the discourse sought to unravel the nuanced layers of meaning encapsulated within these masterpieces. Picasso's anti-war magnum opus, resonating in stark black and white, stands as a poignant condemnation of violence. Conversely, Sadequain's vibrant mural seamlessly melds calligraphy and culture, weaving a tapestry of rich symbolism at the confluence of art and politics. This discussion provided a scholarly platform for dissecting these works, shedding light on their profound socio-political resonances.

Prof Sadia Pasha shared her insights on the future of art & design education in Pakistan at the recent Third IAFOR Conference on Educational Research & Innovation (ERI2023)-Washington DC.

The study highlights the need to embrace the ways that have proven โ€˜fitโ€™ for โ€˜usโ€™ since ages and to relocate โ€˜the apparatus of value-codingโ€™ to highlight the indigenous sensibilities of design pedagogy and practice. It also proposes to diminish the absurd boundaries between art and craft and the idea of considering art as a lifestyle. These are some of the ways that can help decolonize and contemporize art & design, education and industry in Pakistan.

*A new perspective on Pakistan's identity as an Islamic Republic*

We had a wonderful session today with Muhammad Shafi, PhD Scholar at the Institute of Global and Historical Studies and Associate Professor of History, who shared his research on how the idea of Pakistan was debated in public arenas (press, coffee houses, parlours, Sufi shrines, political gatherings) and how they influenced the formation of Pakistan's identity as an Islamic Republic that was neither theocratic nor secular. He challenged the conventional view that the political elite or pressure groups were the main actors in shaping Pakistan's identity and offered a new perspective based on historical evidence and analysis.

We thank Muhammad Shafi for his enlightening presentation and all the participants for their active engagement. We hope to see you again in our next event.

๐ŸŒŸ Unveiling the Mysteries of Emotions: Shehar Bano at "Unsettling Certainties" Conference ๐Ÿ“œ

Our brilliant PhD Scholar, Shehar Bano, at the Department of History, Institute of Global and Historical Studies, recently presented her work at the Fourth Biennial Conference of the Society for the History of Emotions at The University of Adelaide! ๐ŸŽ“โœจ

๐Ÿ•Œ "Weeping Among the Shrine Communities of Pakistan" ๐Ÿ’ง

In her thought-provoking presentation, Shehar Bano unveils the intricate tapestry of emotions woven within the shrine-based communities of Pakistan. ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฐ These communities, comprising individuals from every social class, historically found their identity deeply rooted in their affiliation with shrines.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ A Symphony of Shared Emotions ๐ŸŽญ

Bano reveals that shrines held profound spiritual power, serving as emotional anchors for these communities. The shared emotions within these shrine-based communities, spanning from 1947 to 2010, manifested in material objects, ritual performances, and responded dynamically to historical processes.

๐ŸŒŒ Emotions as Historical Narratives ๐Ÿ“–

Historical phenomena like the Partition in 1947, the wars of 1965 and 1971, technological advancements, and conflicting religious ideologies all left their mark on the emotional performances of these communities. Affiliation with shrines, Bano argues, offered an "economy of emotions" to shrine communities intricately linked to societal changes.

๐Ÿ•Œ The Architectural Symphony ๐Ÿฐ

The architecture of shrines, a silent yet powerful document in history, played a pivotal role in inducing weeping. These sacred spaces were revered, and the emotive success of their power was evident in rituals, devotions, and the collective response to historical shifts.

๐Ÿค Bridging Divides: Laal Shahbaz Qalander's Shrine ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Remarkably, some shrines, like that of Laal Shahbaz Qalander in Sindh, became places of unity, drawing visitors from different religious communities. The architecture of the shrine, as an agent of sacredness and veneration, induced weeping as a response to the ever-changing historical landscape.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Architectural Heritage: A Source of Cultural Identity ๐ŸŒ

The vernacular architecture of shrines became not only a source of culture but also a pillar of identity for these communities. It stood as a testament to their resilience in the face of evolving historical narratives.

๐ŸŒˆ A Tapestry of Emotions Unraveled

As we reflect on Shehar Bano's exploration of emotions within shrine communities, let's appreciate the rich historical tapestry woven through architecture, rituals, and shared experiences. The legacy of these emotions continues to shape the cultural identity of shrine communities in Pakistan. ๐ŸŒนโœจ

๐ŸŒ Exploring the Kargil War: Unraveling the Threads of History ๐Ÿ“š

In a talk, Muhammad Umair Butt, an MPhil Scholar at the Department of History, Institute of Global and Historical Studies, shared a fascinating perspective on the intricacies of the Kargil War, offering a unique insight into Pakistan's strategic moves during that critical period.

๐Ÿ” Understanding Pakistan's Diplomatic Chessplay in the Kargil War

Muhammad Umair Butt suggests that during the Kargil War, Pakistan aimed not only to secure its interests in the region but also to internationalize the Kashmir dispute. At that time, rumors circulated that the UN was considering shelving issues unresolved for over 50 years. Faced with this prospect, Pakistan strategically leveraged its nuclear power status to its advantage.

๐ŸŒ Aiming for Global Attention: The UN Agenda and Kashmir Dispute

In the backdrop of the UN's potential decision to place longstanding issues on the backburner, Pakistan sought to keep the Kashmir conflict alive as a prominent UN agenda item. By doing so, it hoped to prevent the Kashmir issue from fading into obscurity and maintain international focus on finding a resolution.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Nuclear Flashpoint or Diplomatic Maneuver?

Butt's research also explores the intriguing possibility that Pakistan, cognizant of its status as a nuclear power, attempted to turn the Kargil conflict into a potential nuclear flashpoint. This bold move aimed to grab global attention and force diplomatic negotiations on the Kashmir issue, thereby seeking a resolution on its own terms.

๐ŸŒ The Intersection of History and Geopolitics

As we reflect on these historical events, it's crucial to appreciate the nuanced intersections of history and geopolitics. Muhammad Umair Butt's research invites us to question conventional narratives and dive deeper into the motives behind significant geopolitical maneuvers.

Understanding our history is key to shaping a more informed and peaceful future. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

"Embarking on this incredible journey through the corridors of history has been nothing short of a revelation. As a doctoral candidate at the Department of History, Institute of Global and Historical Studies, and also serving as an Associate Professor and Head of the History Department at Government Shalimar College, my research has delved deep into the pulsating debates that unfolded in the public arenas of Pakistan's Punjab between 1947 and 1977.

Picture this - vibrant discussions in public gatherings, literary circles, and public parlors influencing the very fabric of Pakistan's identity. The clash of ideologies between the religious rightists advocating for an Islamic state and the leftist activists championing a secular vision is nothing short of a gripping tale.

My analytical lens has honed in on critical aspects such as the nature of debates, the status of minorities, center-province relations, fundamental rights, and democratic values. These weren't just theoretical discussions; they were the beating heart of a nation trying to define itself.

The constitutional framers were faced with a monumental task โ€“ colliding two seemingly opposite categories, Islam and republic, in the constitutions of 1956, 1962, and 1973. The result? The Islamic Republic of Pakistan, an embodiment of the complex interplay of ideas that have shaped our nation.

This work isn't just a journey through the past; it's an exploration of the very essence of what makes Pakistan. Join me at the Department of History, Institute of Global and Historical Studies on this intellectual adventure, where every page turns to reveal a new layer of our nation's history."
