The manjerico is considered the official plant of the Santos Populares and symbolizes luck and love. During the festivities, it's common to see manjericos decorated with colorful paper flags and small poems or popular verses.

In Portugal, the manjerico is known as the herb of lovers and has been associated with the traditions of the matchmaking saint, Saint Anthony. According to the old tradition, the manjerico should be given to a loved one, who must take care of the plant until June 13th of the following year. In the past, this was a serious commitment, akin to a marriage proposal.

There's an interesting tradition associated with the manjerico: unlike other plants, it should not be smelled directly. Instead, you gently stroke the leaves with your hand and then smell your hand to enjoy the aroma.
