The next spot in our Lisbon exploration is a speakeasy full of surprises, not least its location in Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, Alfama. With only few seats and a password (reservations) required, this venue feels special in the best way possible.

early 17th century: from c**k1 + tail1. The original use was as an adjective describing a creature with a tail like that of a c**k, specifically a horse with a docked tail; hence (because hunters and coach-horses were generally docked) a racehorse which was not a thoroughbred, having a c**k-tailed horse in its pedigree (early 19th century). c**ktail (sense 1) (originally US, also early 19th century) is perhaps analogous, from the idea of an adulterated spirit.

Cocktail historian David Wondrich also speculates that "c**ktail" is a reference to gingering, a practice for perking up an old horse by means of a ginger suppository so that the animal would "c**k its tail up and be frisky."

origins of the word “c**ktail” have been debated. The first written mention of “c**ktail” as a beverage appeared in The Farmers Cabinet, 1803 in the United States. The first definition of a c**ktail as an alcoholic beverage appeared three years later in The Balance and Columbian Repository (Hudson, New York) May 13, 1806. Traditionally, c**ktail ingredients included spirits, sugar, water and bitters, however, this definition evolved throughout the 1800s, to include the addition of a liqueur. In 1862 Jerry Thomas published a bartender’s guide called How to Mix Drinks; or The Bon Vivant’s Companion which included 10 c**ktail recipes using bitters to differentiate from other drinks such as punches and cobblers. Cocktails continued to evolve and gain popularity throughout the 1900s, with the term eventually expanding to cover all mixed drinks.
