In sharp contrast with the Jews, Jesus declares that He comes from God and only seeks God's glory. He speaks what God wants Him to say. Jesus returns to Jerusalem where He finds hatred of Himself from the Jews and a diminshing popularity. The people grumbled at the kind of Rescuer He portrays Himself to be. The hard words of Jesus' supernatural origins & His mission dramatically reduces the number of supposed "disciples" who are only interested in following Him on their own terms.
it becomes much clearer than before why Jesus does not entrust Himself to people who believe solely on the basis of miracles/signs. But Peter answers Jesus' question to the 12 correctly if they too want to leave...

Thus far, John points us to 3 signs that Jesus did that speak of His identity but the Jews remain sceptical. Now, Jesus points to what will validate these claims & He calls at least 3 witnesses. Jesus tells His disciples: "My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to accomplish His work...lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest." He demonstrates this when the Samaritans confessed:"...and we know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world." Thus far, Jesus has been dealing with the Jews. We have been told us that whoever believes will enter God's Kingdom but the faith of many, including Nicodemus is confused & many will end up rejecting Jesus. However, we see in John 4 that marvellously Jesus reaches an unlikely candidate, a Samaritan woman. He offers her living water that will forever quench her thirst.
