Thailand just announced a ban on plastic waste imports by 2025✋

The country has been one of many destinations for plastic scraps from neighbouring developed countries, which has impacted the health of its citizens and polluted its air and water.

While this is done in the interest of Thailand's environmental health, it creates uncertainty for the region. Especially the major exporters of plastic waste. 🤔

It’s difficult to evaluate a product's environmental cred.🫡

Without a clear definition and universal standards, words associated with sustainability often fall victim to misuse. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So let's take the time today and actually dissect some of these sustainability jargons we hear plenty of and reclaim our eco-language. 📖

Bioplastic - An overarching term for plastics that is derived from biomaterials a.k.a living things. 🦒

Carbon Neutrality - Refers to a state where our carbon emission is equal to carbon removed from the atmosphere. ⚖️

Organic - Refers to products that are derived from either plants or animals. 🌱

Problem-solving requires a little weirdness.

Weirdness can be transformative when done right.

More importantly, it just makes life a little more colourful. 🌈

Here are some, WILD, CREATIVE and GREEN solutions we found in the eco-sphere. 😝

#1 Edible bubble made from seaweed that aims to replace single-use plastic cups and bottles.

Popping bottles just took a whole new meaning. 🍾

#2 Helium airship with auxiliary wing and tail surfaces that flies through aerostatic and aerodynamic lift.

It literally floats like a balloon. 🎈

#3 Ecoffins, caskets made out of pandanus or bamboo and banana sheaves that decompose along with the body. 💀

Everybody makes mistakes...

Everybody has those days.

While we are all not perfect Green heroes, it is important to take a quick sec and examine some of our habits. 🤔

Here are some Sustainability Fails that can derail your righteous path to green-vana 👼

First Fail: You probably already have what you need, green or not. Minimizing our consumption instead and using what we already have goes a long way. 💕

Second Fail: Packaging is a HUGE contributor of waste. When in the store, make sure to check not just the product but the packaging too. ✅

Third Fail: Watch out for vague "eco" terms. If the company cannot back up their claim of sustainability... run. 🏃‍♀️

It is a cause for celebration to all when it is announced that starting from July 3 majority of supermarkets will charge at least 5 cents for each bag. 🥳

Not only does this minimize the use of plastic bags, but this can also catalyze a greater awareness of waste management among Singaporeans. 🤔

Some roarsome tips on celebrating Christmas sustainably:
1. Use or reuse gift wrappers. Or, use a reusable one like fabric! They look so cool!
2. Gift eco-friendly gifts - it could be sustainably-made or simply an experience! Zero-waste!
3. We know it could be a hassle. But using reusable diningware could mean a (dishwashing) foam party after the Christmas meal! 🎉🍽
4. Spice things up by introducing plant-based Christmas meals. You’d be surprised by how amazing plant-based options taste nowadays! Vegetable 🌽 🍅 🥬🥦🥒🍆🍎🍉🍑🍐🍇
