The Science of 'Suicidal Headaches'
Cluster headaches can cause the worst pain known to humans.
The pain is so intense that 22% of the patients have suicidal thoughts during cluster headache attacks, hence they’re called "su***de headaches”.
The term ‘cluster’ is used as the attacks usually occur in groups or clusters. Attacks can occur on consecutive days for 6 to 8 weeks, usually at a very specific time of the day.
Attacks are one-sided only, and almost always on the same side of the head. A single episode of cluster headache can last between 15 minutes to 3 hours.
Cluster headache affects around 0.3% of the population and usually develops between the ages of 20 and 40. It rarely occurs in children, and it’s extremely rare after 75. Men are affected around three times more often than women.
Cluster headaches can become more intense with smoking and alcohol consumption, and can be relieved with the help of physical activity or Oxygen therapy. Inhaling pure oxygen effectively stops cluster headache attacks.
