Understand Expiration Dates
We are all guilty of throwing away food way before it goes bad, mainly out of fear, but also out of confusion.
Part of the reason we throw away so much food is the ambiguity around the terms "use by," "sell by," and "best by." For the most part, these terms were always intended to help the food industry with quality control when it came to inventory and wholesale transactions.12 In fact, there is no standardized rule for food and expiration dates. This not only confuses consumers, but also worsens the increasing food waste problem.
In short, the sell-by date is a general guide to indicate the overall freshness of a food item, but it is not a definitive consumption date by any means.

Q: What marketing tools are the local mom and pop stores using to survive these days?
A: Word of mouth. This is a slow process but basically, their physical plant signage and word of mouth are what they rely on.
Mom & Pop shop owners are really good entrepreneurs, they can provide special customer service with a wealth of knowledge, unique to the market that they do business in. They don’t have endless pockets, so it’s in their best interest to provide outstanding customer service to survive.
What do you miss most about mom and pop shops?
I miss those Sunday morning visits with my dad where I was allowed to buy my favourite candy and the aunty of the shop used to give an additional. Happy days!
Why don’t people shop at local community businesses anymore? Wouldn’t you prefer to support the mom & pop shops? I prefer to shop at mom and pop stores because I always find something unique or different. It’s also fun getting to meet and talk to the owner. They always have a cool story on how they started their store.
