Putting the lie to the age of push-button warfare, or, Why CQC Matters.
Push-button technology may indeed be a singularity in force multiplication, but when all is said and done, it is ultimately just gear. And the more complex the gear, the more likely it is to fail in high-stress situations. In the end, when all your gear is broken or inaccessible, your war will be won and lost on your ability and willingness to take the fight to the enemy with the most basic of tools - rocks, sticks, fists, feet and teeth.
Make no mistake - whether or not you are ready and willing to do so, the enemy will be more than ready and willing to do so to YOU. The rules of civilised warfare are a laughable joke, and the first casualty in any conflict.
Get trained. Get educated. Stand ready.

Above and beyond a solid series of fundamental drills for developing and consolidating the flat-foot squat, some very cogent thoughts on self-awareness and maintaining boundaries for lifelong training from Combat Professor Kevin Secours.
Realise that no one cares about or respects your issues or limitations. This includes coaches, training partners, or even trainees, all of whom are potentially very ready to trivialise and mock you for having very real issues and limitations at any given time.
If you want to be able to train for life without being broken by the callousness or even deliberate malice of others, you have to take three key points to heart.
1.) Realise that you cannot control how people respond to the authentic you. If you open up with honesty to others, be prepared to be misunderstood, rejected and persecuted - not simply as a possibility, but by default. That's just how the world works. In the end, we're all in this alone.
2.) Get comfortable with the discomfort of rejection so you can firmly say 'no' to practices and challenges that will certainly damage you. If a person or group of persons cares so little about you that they will violate your boundaries and injure your person to force conformation to their norms, they're not worth keeping around anyway. Someone else's problems are always trivial - that's just how human beings think. It's your body that you will have to drag around for the rest of your life - honour its limitations.
3.) Pushing your limits is not the same as seeking out pain and injury. It's about treading the razor's edge between caution and arduous seeking - veering one way leads to cowardice and indolence, veering the other leads to suicidal recklessness. There is always a way to train around limitations - just not necessarily one that is generally regarded as glamorous or even obvious. The mature seeker seeks education and practices creativity in planning training.

How a vegan diet could affect your intelligence The vegan diet is low in – or, in some cases, entirely devoid of – several important brain nutrients. Could these shortcomings be affecting vegans' abilities to think?
Combat Professor Kevin Secours explaining the mechanics of proper diaphragmatic breathing. The diaphragm is not one muscle working in isolation, but two working in synchrony. The ancient Chinese martial artists and qigong experts understood this intimately, as expressed in their key points on posture (neutral spine) and pelvic floor activation when breathing to maximise intraabdominal compression. Give this a try in your conscious breath practice, be it during yoga, martial arts, or even weightlifting.
Maximizing the diaphragm in breathing A brief clip from the ICSA Level 6 module on breathing, highlighting the importance of maximizing the diaphragm. To view the complete download, please visit:...
Yes, why not? Fill that one, single celebratory meal in how many weeks or months with shame, guilt and neurotic fretting over calories. Because, as everyone and their auntie knows, your habits over the other 364 days of the year have absolutely zero bearing on your health.
Nope, it's that one day of eating that will make you fat and give you metabolic syndrome. Definitely that one.
Here's a challenge for all of you - kick holiday dietary neuroticism in the nuts. Cut loose and enjoy yourselves with family and loved ones. There is a time to work hard and be strict with diet. This is not one of them. If you have worked consistently the other 80% of the year, you've earned it. If you haven't, doing it now won't save you, and merely makes you obnoxious to be around. Either way, the aftermath remains the same - get back in the saddle after the holidays and work hard at those good habits. It's the daily work that counts, not the occasional binge of shame.
Joyous Yuletide to you and your loved ones from Valhalla Training Systems. May the year ahead of you be a fulfilling and productive one.
And for the love of all that's holy - don't be a neurotic twatwaffle. No one will like you.
Food matters. No out-training a bad diet.
Processed foods make us fatter, lead to cancer, and are linked with early death. But what exactly is a processed food? Scientists have clear ways of defining which foods are processed. A lot of it has to do with the ingredients that keep items shelf-stable.
Much of the industry has a poor evidential base, with only coaching notes and anecdotes to go on. When there *is* strong evidence, backed by sound theory, do you really want to stay behind in the stone age while the world moves forward?

A very successful - if brief - afternoon working with Sifu Dominic Lim of Singapore Taichokun. Dominic is a veteran of both martial arts and the iron game, and quickly intuited key concepts - such as the coordinated bracing of the grip, arms, anterior and posterior chain in top and bottom positions to control the bell - once some adaptational hurdles were overcome. Created some simple routines, keeping things simple, effective, and sustainably scalable for the working family man passionate about physical pursuits.
Stay tuned for more in the weeks to come. Great things are happening this year.
A very interesting experiment on a politically-charged topic in the martial arts world. Lots of thought-provoking moments for both sides of the equation. To sum up:
- There are no magic pills. Nothing is guaranteed.
- Perception and adaptation give advantage.
- It's not over until either something vital is perforated, or else all the space is taken and stays taken.
- Watch for the hand switches.

Movement affects psychology affects reality. Be poised for the reality you want, or accept the reality your current poise attracts.
Show up and do something - anything - meaningful. Consistently. Over time. Because the only workout - and lifestyle - that matters in the end is one that you can - and do - go the distance with. Records are transient. You yourself are the truest testament to your own consistent efforts.

Mindfulness in the age of distraction comes with concrete physical benefits. Try this simple exercise:
1.) Sit or lie down comfortably. Lotus position not necessary, but recommended if you can do it (a straight spine helps with things).
2.) Diaphragmatic breathing, in and out through the nose. Exhale through the mouth initially if breathing is difficult, but aim to master nasal breathing.
3.) Count in cycles of 10 breaths - forwards or backwards, whichever works better for you. Every time you find yourself losing the count, start the cycle over.
4.) Complete as many cycles as you can. Aim to increase this number over time with practice.
Enjoy. Get your mindfulness on.
Neuroscience shows that 50-year-olds can have the brains of 25-year-olds if they sit quietly and do nothing for 15 minutes a day You can see significant positive changes in just 15 minutes a day.
