So im the Journalist Meerkat Photographer apparently
Journalists are represented by a Meerkat for their curious, perceptive, and outgoing nature. They are willing to go to great lengths to capture defining moments and thrive when telling a story. As curious photographers, they often find themselves shooting scenes where they capture something unexpected. However, due to the spontaneous nature of their scenes, Journalists need to be quick-thinking and have a well-trained eye in order to capture great shots. The key to taking consistently great photos as a Journalist is persistence and that's reflected in the wonderful stories and moments they capture.
How You Approach Photography
Subjects and Scenes
While you aren't limited by the subjects and scenes you shoot, you often find yourself drawn towards styles of photography that are fast-moving, story-driven, and spontaneous. That makes you naturally suited for street, family, and documentary photography. And also wildlife and pet photography.
Importantly, you are more interested in telling a story than capturing a beautiful landscape. That doesn't mean there can't be beautiful locations in your photos, but rather that the location should add to, and not distract from the story.
Planning
You understand better than most that life is what happens when you're busy making other plans. While other types of photographers can be quite meticulous in their planning, you will act on your instinct and intuition. This includes moving from location to location, taking lots of photos to capture one perfect shot, being adaptable to the gear you have, and trying lots of compositions.
If plans are invitations to disappointment, Journalists are rarely disappointed.
Shooting Style
To outsiders, you seem to be the most daring and fast-paced of all photographers as you will regularly put yourself in uncomfortable positions to capture a single photo. But the reality is that you aren't uncomfortable in awkward situations, you're too busy being excited about the images you're capturing. The thrill of capturing a photo that tells a story that others can't tell is more than enough to motivate you to act daringly for the perfect shot.
You quickly move from location to location, shoot regardless of the gear you have with you and are happy to break rules (and sometimes even laws) to get great shots. Your willingness to take these extra steps is what leads to your extraordinary photos. You will often be found getting up close and personal with a subject as a result.
"Are you sure you're allowed to shoot like that?"
You are often carefree which can make other photographers feel uncomfortable when shooting with you. You are better off only shooting with others who are daring or determined. The last thing you want is for someone to give up when you're just getting started, just as a story is starting to unfold. Shooting according to a detailed plan can be immensely rewarding, but you thrive when you get to utilise your intuition.
Taking Lots of Photos is Encouraged
It's hard for you to know what you're going to shoot until you see it in front of you. That's why you're compelled to take lots of photos. Not only does this help to share the whole story of what's happening, but it allows you to experiment with your composition and timing. As you will frequently shoot people you know, this allows you to capture memories in great detail.
Processing
You will shoot hundreds or even thousands of photos in a single day, trying to capture unique moments and compositions. As a result, there is often a lot of photos to go through at the end of it. But you are most interested in telling a story. This means you have to pick and edit dozens of photos before you can share them.
Once the favourite photos have been selected, you tend to edit the photos in batches, allowing you to share a consistent series of photos that tell a story.
One thing that can divide Journalists like yourself is your willingness to manipulate your images in tools like Photoshop. While it's not impossible to find a Journalist who meticulously edits every photo in Photoshop, the real joy for you comes from capturing and sharing a decisive moment with minimal editing. If you want to thrive as a Journalist, we suggest capturing photos that look true to the scene you captured.
Sharing
You love sharing your exciting and lively narratives on various online platforms.
While your counterpart, the Camper, will only share the best photo from a shoot, this is not sufficient for you who want to tell a story. You will often post an entire album of images at once, to share a true representation of the scene you witnessed. While there may be one or two images that stand out, the whole album is greater than the sum of its parts.
Social likes and comments from friends are nice to have, but for you, connecting and engaging in discussions is much more important. Making people understand who you are and how you see the world means a lot to you.
Lastly, as you tend to capture scenes that are considered documentary and print-worthy, you will often submit your photos to websites like Reddit.
How to Excel as a Journalist
Photographers who follow the path of their photoGRAPH find it very easy to improve, as they're fully aligned with their natural strengths.
Here's a checklist of things to consider if you want to excel as a Journalist:
• Try shooting street, family, and documentary photography
• Trust your instincts before your shoot, including moving from location to location, taking lots of photos, and trying many compositions
• Shoot in multiple locations for a cohesive series of images
• Only shoot with other photographers and friends who as daring and determined as you are to avoid sabotaging your shoot before a great story unfolds
• Keep taking photos until you get one you're happy with
• Stick to Lightroom for processing and share a series of images to tell your narrative of events
