IT’S NATIONAL FOOT HEALTH WEEK! AND... in addition to checking your feet for signs of Melanoma - we are supporting the College of Podiatry in Introducing this year’s theme: “The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering”. Seriously check it out - some amazing information EVERYONE should know! https://rcpod.org.uk/fhw

CHECKING YOUR FEET FOR SIGNS OF MELANOMA!
Unlike other melanoma, Acral Lentiginous Melanoma (ALM) is usually located on the palms of hands and soles of feet. ALM is the only type of melanoma which arises equally across all skin types and is frequently observed in darker skin types. ALM can advance faster than other melanoma, becoming quickly invasive.

As people with dark skin tones are less prone to other forms of melanoma, ALM is the most common melanoma in people with these skin types.

ALM sometimes develops from an existing mole, but It can also occur seemingly out of nowhere on healthy skin.

ALM often appear as a black discolouration, but can be very subtle such as an ill defined patch of light brown-grey, discoloured skin that can look like a stain or a bruise (not obviously cause by trauma), that won’t heal.

In addition to the ‘ABCDE’ of melanoma, look out for a slowly enlarging flat patch of discoloured skin with a smooth surface at first, later becoming thicker with an irregular surface that may be dry or warty.

THE ‘ABCDE’ TOOL: Asymmetric / Border irregularity / Colour variation / Diameter > 6mm / Evolution

DISCOLOURATION: Ill-defined patch, stain or bruise with variable pigmentation (brown, blue-grey, black and red)

EVOLUTION: Smooth at first, becoming thicker. May be dry, warty, ulcerated or bleeding.

If you detect anything of this nature - seek immediate advice from your GP or a dermatologist.

EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES!

It’s a big day for Podiatry in Singapore today. Helen was one of the pioneer podiatrists in Singapore, the 6th to arrive in 1995, and worked here nearly 28 years. She initially worked in and set up departments in three government hospitals as well as working in the poly clinics, before moving into private practice. Rob is rapidly clocking up years of service too having been here 28 years.

Dear Fellow Podiatrists,

Happy 30th Podiatry Day of Singapore!

It is my honour to represent the association and the public to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for your outstanding dedication and hard work in promoting foot and lower limb health in our community.

Your tireless commitment and expertise have been instrumental in advancing podiatric medicine in Singapore and providing excellent care to patients with various foot and lower limb conditions. Your compassion and professionalism have made a real difference in the lives of many individuals, and we are grateful for your contributions.

As we commemorate this special day, I encourage you to continue your passion and take pride in all aspects of your work. I am confident that together, we can further advance the field of podiatry and improve the health and well-being of Singaporeans.

I would like to also invite all Singaporeans to join us in recognising and thanking our podiatrists for their invaluable contributions to our healthcare system. If you or you know someone who has benefited from the help of our Podiatrists, please leave us a message below! Let us come together to show our appreciation and raise awareness of Podiatry in Singapore!

Once again, on behalf of the Podiatry Association (Singapore), I wish all our Podiatrists a very happy Podiatry Day. Let us continue working together to promote healthy feet and lower limbs.

Here's our last tip ... what to do with those super long laces without tying a double knot that is impossible to undo!

09/08/2021

Lock lacing - for those with slim ankles or need the foot to be held more securely in the shoe. This can be useful for those who wear orthotics as they can lift the foot up in the shoe a little causing slippage at the heel. Also good for people who have a tendency for blackened toenails!

Second video in our series. This ones for the kids to make it easier to keep the lace tight whilst they tie the bow 🎀

22/07/2021

We're starting a mini series of videos on how to wear and lace your shoes properly. Here's the first - whilst it seems pretty simple it will go a long way in making your shoes and orthotics last longer (saving 💰 💵 !), as well as making it easier to put your shoes on and lace them up properly the next time you want to wear them!

Growing pains ..... or maybe not?

Many children complain of pains in their legs which are often dismissed as growing pains. We have had a recent spate of referrals from some very switched on GP’s that have taken a look further down the leg to the feet.

Some ‘growing pains’ are in fact associated with poor foot posture or flat feet. The excessive ‘rolling in’ or over pronation leads to increased stresses on the muscles of the legs and increased pull on the bones they insert into causing the pain. In many cases orthotics can help alleviate these symptoms (painful legs, waking up crying at night etc) by supporting the foot in a better position and reducing the strain on the muscles.

Here is some lovely feedback (in comments below) we got from one mother a few weeks after her son received his orthotics.

Please call 6734 4236 if you need an appointment.

INTRODUCING THE LATEST MEMBER OF OUR TEAM - ESTHER KHOO - MASSAGE THERAPIST. CALL 6734 4236 TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT.

Esther achieved her Diploma in Remedial Massage from the School of Integrated Body Therapy (Aus) in 2006. She also has a Diploma in Anatomy, Physiology and Massage (U.K.) together with other certificates in Musculoskeletal Anatomy and Whole Health Pathology. More recently, she completed a certificate in Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) and Arthrofascial Stretching from The Art And Science of Kinesiology LLC (USA) in 2015.

Esther believes that assessment is important to prioritise what the musculoskeletal issues are and treat them systematically. She typically starts her first session with a patient with a postural and foot assessment. She is passionate that massage therapy should be patient-driven; not a predetermined set of techniques that is performed routinely on every patient. She understands and appreciates that each individual is different with unique problems and issues. To her, massage therapy can address many musculoskeletal issues such as pain caused by myofascial trigger points (muscular knots), restricted range of motion, poor circulation and weakness. Where necessary, Arthrofascial Stretching techniques are also ulitized to improve and facilitate musculoskeletal mobility and flexibility. Esther seeks to find answers to each patient’s myofascial and musculoskeletal questions to enable her to solve their issues permanently.
