Every ending is a new beginning. Here’s a message from artistic director, Low Mei Yoke . Tap to read more below!

Hello everyone!

Founded in 1991 as a non-profit professional contemporary dance company, Frontier Danceland became full-fledged in 2011. The company has officially transitioned out of full-time operations by the end of September 2023. The current dance studio and office space at Goodman Arts Centre will be returned to Arts House Limited, and Frontier Danceland will continue to operate on a smaller scale moving forward.

Change is the catalyst for new possibilities and opportunities, and I am hopeful for what lies ahead in the future. While letting go of the past, let us not forget to celebrate the friendships forged on this journey. This is not a farewell, but a promise of new beginnings.

Dear friends, thank you for being part of this chapter with Frontier Danceland, and for the continued support you’ve given the company all these years. In this season of change - onward to the next dance of my life.

Feeling a sense of déjà vu?

Here are some film stills and behind the scenes photos from 𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬 by artistic director, Low Mei Yoke and 𝘙𝘦 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘺 by local choreographer, Chiew Peishan as part of Stage On-Screen: A Filmic Translation of MILIEU 2021 Live Performance.

💡Did you know?
Similar to the 2021 edition of Dancers' Locker, MILIEU 2021 also features a digital presentation, Stage On-Screen, which relooks live contemporary dance performances through the visual language of the filmic lens in supporting a meaningful conveyance of the physical performance originally meant for in person experience.

Curated in 2012, 𝙈𝙄𝙇𝙄𝙀𝙐 (previously known as Double Bill) is an annual year-end production that features a double bill of mid-length works, usually a creation by artistic director, Low Mei Yoke, alongside another invited local or international choreographer. The diversity of cultures and influences supports the continued exploration of new frontiers in embodying a unique versatility that is the hallmark of Frontier Danceland.

Past editions of Dancers’ Locker served as a creative platform for Frontier Danceland’s company artists to explore choreography of a live performance, working towards the presentation of short works in intimate settings. This platform, initiated by artistic director Low Mei Yoke, has nurtured 40 dance artists in 62 choreographic ventures since 2009.

Here’s a look back at some film stills from Dancers’ Locker 2020 and Dancers' Locker 2021 (Filmic Adaptation).

Initiated in 2009, 𝘿𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙨' 𝙇𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧 served as a creative platform for Frontier Danceland’s company artists to explore, experiment and showcase new and innovative works.

The 2020 edition saw the experimentation of performance and choreography through the audio-visual medium of film as mediated through the screen. In collaboration with artistic collaborator and local film producer, Jeremy Chua, six individual works-in-progress short films were presented. Some of these works were selected for screenings at various international film festivals!

💡Did you know?
In the 2021 edition of Dancers' Locker, in addition to the live performance presentation of 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘉𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 (2021) co-choregraphed by Sammantha Yue, Mark Robles, Ma YueRu and Tan Xin Yen, Frontier Danceland also collaborated with local film director, Kris Ong to experiment a differentiated art-making process of relooking the entire concept of the live performance from a film director’s perspective and conceptualizing it for the filmic form. A unique aspect of this filmic adaptation is the extensive use of visual effects (VFX)!

View till the end to explore past editions of Dancers’ Locker.

Stay tuned for next week’s as we uncover and share the most memorable moments from Dancers' Locker live performances!

It's time to rewind the clock and relive the unforgettable moments from the past editions of SIDES!

We are thankful for the opportunity to have worked with 21 dance artists and collaborators in presenting 24 creations as part of the SIDES platform over the past years.

One of the familiar names in SIDES is Shahar Binyamini, who has recently created 𝘔𝘖𝘙𝘌 𝘛𝘏𝘈𝘕 𝘏𝘜𝘔𝘈𝘕 (2022) as part of SIDES 2021. This marks his fourth collaboration with Frontier Danceland and is also the last edition of the annual performance platform.

Alert! Do you still remember this particular scene?

Featuring a film still from 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘺 (2021) by local dance artist Chiew Peishan, one half of SIDES 2020 digital double bill.

From 2013 to 2022, 𝙎𝙄𝘿𝙀𝙎 is Frontier Danceland’s annual performance platform that brings together both international and local choreographers to explore the various tangents of contemporary dance.

Fun Fact
💡Did you know? The annual production is usually held in May, with the exception of the last two editions.

Aside from that, SIDES 2020 is the only edition that explores the potentiality of performance and choreography in the digital space while the other editions maintain a live performance focus to allow for a unique and irreplaceable audience experience.

Frontier Danceland would like to announce a transition out of full-time dance company operation by 31 March 2024.

Co-founded in 1991 by Tan Chong Poh and current Artistic Director and 2018 Cultural Medallion recipient Low Mei Yoke, Frontier Danceland has forged through various evolutions for the past 32 years to become one of the key dance organizations in Singapore. We became full-fledged in 2011 and have engaged in artmaking with different generations of dance artists, like-minded collaborators and dance companies both locally and internationally.

Reflecting on Frontier Danceland’s journey, Low shares “I would like to take time to slow down, recharge and reflect upon my artistic practice and creative endeavour. I hope to come out of the sojourn reinvigorated.”

Frontier Danceland will be presenting Dancers’ Locker and MILIEU as part of the 2023 performance season. We are grateful to audiences, friends, partners and donors for supporting Frontier Danceland through the years, and ask for your continued care and support through the transition and beyond.
