📌 Weekly Scams Bulletin Issue No. 16 (19 Apr 2024)

💰 Received an SMS from 'banks' offering fixed-deposit (FD) schemes with high interest rates? Beware, this could be a bank impersonation scam! 💰

In this scam, interested victims who call the number provided in the SMSes are asked by scammers posing as bank staff to open ‘bank accounts’ for the fixed deposits.

They will also be provided fake bank statements as confirmation and are asked to transfer money into their new ‘bank accounts’ to secure the high interest rate.

Victims realise that they have been scammed when they see no record of the deposit being made on their banking app or upon verifying with the actual banks.

🔎CHECK – Look out for unrealistically high rates offered in SMSes. Banks will never send SMSes with clickable links and the sender’s name will always reflect the banks’ officially registered names. Organisations that are not officially registered with IMDA with reflect a Sender ID as “Likely-SCAM”. You can also call the bank directly at its official hotline to verify the authenticity of any bank offers.

📣 TELL – Report any fraudulent transactions to the bank and file a police report if you think you’ve been scammed.

Call the Anti-Scam Helpline at 1800-722-6688 to check when you are unsure if a situation you are facing is a scam.
