We are delighted to congratulate Mr. Kurt Wee, Chairperson of the Community Engagement and Partnerships (CEP) Standing Committee and the Investment Committee (second from the right), on being awarded the Public Service Medal in this year’s National Day Awards. Mr. Wee received this honor for his remarkable contributions as the Immediate Past President of the Association of Small & Medium Enterprises (ASME).

At Singapore Children’s Society, Mr. Wee has been a committed Board member since 2007 and his leadership in launching the 1000 Enterprises for Children‐in‐Need (1000E) and 1000 Philanthropists for Children‐in‐Need (1000P) initiatives has been pivotal. These programmes have become major contributors to our donation income, enabling us to better serve children, youth and families in need.

Mr. Wee’s efforts have galvanised the SME community to support children’s welfare, raising substantial funds that have expanded our capacity to provide essential services. We warmly congratulate him on this well-deserved award and thank him for his dedication over the last 17 years.

Young children can experience mental health concerns. As supportive adults, it is crucial for us to be able to identify signs of distress and use the right approaches to support them. In this article on The Straits Times, Vivyan Chee (Head of Flourishing Minds) and Lin Xiaoling (Head of Advocacy) spoke about the ways to identify these signs and the role we can play in safeguarding the mental wellbeing of children and youth.

What comes to mind when you hear the word step-family? Some might think of fairy tale step-parents like Maleficent, The Evil Queen, and more. While such negative portrayals are common, many may not realise the positives of being part of a step-family.

In our latest issue, we delve into eye-opening interviews with step-family members. Discover the challenges they face, the strategies they use to adapt and the advantages of step-family living.

"Mental health is not a disorder but is a state of health that includes one's emotional, psychological and social well-being." This is a quote from one of our volunteers who attended the 'Our Mighty Minds' workshop organised by our colleagues from Flourishing Minds @ Children's Society. The workshop covered grounds for mental health education where role-playing activities and interactive games were carried out to create an environment to emphathise with the struggles that children face.

⛈️ Do you find your child having outbursts and physical aggressions that affect their behaviour in school or at home? Emotional regulations start at a young age and they affect how the child interacts with people and understands situations in their daily lives.

Singapore Children’s Society held our 72nd Annual General Meeting on 25 April. In his address, our Chairman, Mr Koh Choon Hui, shared some key highlights that happened in 2023, such as fundraising events conducted, the progress of our services and programmes, and what the Society will be working towards in the coming years.

Mental health is an area in which Children’s Society will continue to focus on, be it scaling up psychological support for children, youth and their families, or increasing our engagement with the community to promote mental health literacy. We also stand by our position on the better safeguarding of children in Singapore and will strive to empower parents and caregivers with the necessary support to meet their children’s needs effectively.

During the meeting, Children’s Society paid tribute to several long-serving members who have stepped down from their respective committees. All of them have been with the Society for over a decade, with the longest being 57 years! Our Deputy Chairman, Prof Ho Lai Yun, presented them with tokens of appreciation to express our gratitude for the service and hard work they have contributed to the Society.

The Society’s members also approved the Annual Report and Audited Accounts for 2023 and the appointment of auditors for 2024. Our 2023 Annual Report and Financial Statements are now available on our website.

🔊 Our "Jun and the Octopus" storybook now comes with a complimentary teaching guide!

Over 40 educators and practitioners joined us on 5 April at Bishan Library for the launch of this guide. It features discussion questions and interactive activities that are aimed at sparking body safety conversations with young children 👧👦

In a panel discussion during the event, Ms Isabel Ong from M.Y World Preschool and Ms Soh Chiew Bee from Admiralty Primary School shared their experiences using the book in their respective classrooms and offered valuable advice on how to discuss this sensitive topic. We hope to see more schools incorporate "Jun and the Octopus" and its teaching guide into their curriculum ☀️

We believe that this teaching guide will help you in effectively addressing and discussing body safety topics with the young ones! If you are an educator, parent or caregiver interested in purchasing this book, head to www.childrensociety.org.sg/shop to find out more! Alternatively, you may contact us over email ([email protected]) if you would like to purchase the book from our Bishan Office.
