Vision Therapy is a brain-based treatment that helps to address, remediate and rehabilitate visual deficits, and to improve visual processing. There’s currently a major conference on neuro visual rehabilitation in Portland, Oregon, USA, and Dr Yap Tiong Peng presented a topic on “oculomotor dysfunction in concussion / mild traumatic brain injuries”. He discussed about Fixational Disorders, and the treatment of this condition postconcussion or after a brain injury. Dr Yap is the first person in Singapore to be fully accredited in Behavioural and Neurodevelopmental Optometry, and US Board Certified in Vision Therapy. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development and Fellow of the Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists.
The Singapore SME 500 is awarded to IGARD by the Association of Trade and Commerce (Singapore). Established since 2004, IGARD focuses on paediatric optometry, children and adult amblyopia and strabismus, vision therapy, children myopia control, low vision and neurovisual rehabilitation, and orthokeratology treatment. “Misinformation about dyslexia abounds. Just google “dyslexia,” and you’ll find hundreds of websites advocating various treatment options and cures. Many ophthalmologists mistakenly believe that because dyslexia is “not an eye issue” it belongs solely to pediatricians and education specialists. However, we play a crucial role in ruling out vision problems and, simultaneously, have a unique opportunity to educate caregivers and prevent them from pursuing non-evidence-based treatments. Such treatments can cost families hundreds to thousands of dollars and delay the child from receiving the most effective interventions.”
Neurostimulation for Vision Restoration
How neurostimulation research in glaucoma is progressing, and why stress management might help.
The retina and optic nerve receive the lion’s share of attention when it comes to glaucoma, but an increasing amount of evidence suggests that brain function may have some role to play as well. One potential vision therapy, known as repetitive transorbital alternating current stimulation or rtACS, delivers electrical impulses to the brain, aiming to modulate damaged brain networks and improve low vision. Early studies show promising results.
Here, experts explain how this technology works, what it means for glaucoma treatment, and how reducing stress may lead to better outcomes: https://www.reviewofophthalmology.com/article/neurostimulation-for-vision-restoration

Hot off the press!!!!! Do you know what are Ocular Motor Disorders? These are problems with eye movements and visual focusing that can hinder reading, reduce attention span, and contributes to the visual discomfort, eyestrain, visual stress, and many other symptoms, such as dizziness, headaches and light sensitivity.
Many of these issues can occur after a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury; neuro visual rehabilitation and vision therapy can help! In Singapore, vision therapy is available at IGARD. “Together with a team in the US, we have published the protocol of our upcoming scoping review on ocular motor disorders in concussion / mild traumatic brain injuries on the British Medical Journal (Open access)”, said Dr Yap Tiong Peng who is a Senior Consultant at IGARD.
Their work is supported by Cochrane Eye and Vision and the American Academy of Optometry. Based in Singapore, Dr Yap is the only member of the team who is located outside of the United States, and the team has already completed the screening of 14,000 abstracts. “I am humbled to be part of this amazing team of brilliant optometrists and academics in the United States, and I am looking forward to adding to the evidence base in the treatment of vision problems related to concussion”, he said.

Reposting from Dr Patrick Quaid’s LinkedIn, with a photo taken together with Dr Yap Tiong Peng during the ACBO annual meeting in Melbourne, Australia. As a keynote speaker, Dr Quaid delivered a series of lectures on the treatment of vision problems related to brain injuries and vision therapy. Dr Quaid is a world renowned eye doctor specialising in vision therapy, and the founder of VUE Cubed Vision Therapy in Canada 🇨🇦. The conference was attended by a large number of vision therapy doctors/optometrists from around the world. A huge shoutout from Dr Yap Tiong Peng and the team from IGARD Centre (Vision Therapy Singapore) 🇸🇬 : We have learnt a lot from you! Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us!!!
An excellent photo opportunity with Professor Ed Howell, inventor of the Howell Phoria Card which is used to evaluate binocular vision in many clinics throughout the world. Dr Yap Tiong Peng was a student with Prof Howell many years ago. He taught the Behavioural Optometry course at the university. In fact, Dr Yap also did his practicum in Melbourne in a clinic run by Dr Paul Croucher, which was founded by Prof Howell in the 1980s. It’s such a wonderful opportunity for both of them to reconnect during the World Congress of Optometry in Melbourne, Australia.
Great time reconnecting with friends and colleagues during the 2023 ACBO annual meeting, together with Dr Yap Tiong Peng (Singapore), Dr Cathy Stern (USA), Dr Adrian Bell (Brisbane) and Dr Rajeev Prasad (India). One thing in common — all of them have been lecturing on vision therapy in India 🇮🇳 . Inset is a photograph taken during the 2019 regional meeting in India, where Dr Bell and Dr Yap served as keynote speakers. Also, Dr Stern and Dr Yap have been collaborating, and most recently they jointly contributed to a book chapter on vision therapy in concussion. Watch this space!
Well done students!
“Recently, we hosted three optometry students from Taiwan to learn about visual processing and vision therapy at our clinic. We are happy that they have successfully completed their learning journey with us”, said Dr Yap Tiong Peng. “We are very proud of our students’ achievements, and we wish them all the best in their studies and future career in optometry.”
Many people throughout South East Asia and beyond have visited IGARD Centre as it is Singapore’s most established practice that offers vision therapy to children and adults.
Some recent publications by Dr Yap Tiong Peng
Precision spectral filters are often used for adults and children who are sensitive to light. Qualified since 1998, Dr Yap Tiong Peng is a pioneer in prescribing these filters in Singapore. He uses a stringent “intuitive colorimetry” testing protocol developed by Emeritus Professor Arnold Wilkins (University of Essex) and has been prescribing these filters to many patients in the past 15 years.
