On 22nd April, NUS Cities and NUS College of Design & Engineering (CDE) graciously hosted the UAE Ambassador His Excellency Jamal Alsuwaidi and the UAESBC for a meeting to discuss opportunities for collaboration between the UAE government and NUS.
Before the meeting, NUS Cities and CDE gave the Embassy and UAESBC a tour of their grounds, of which the majority of the buildings are net zero! In attendance from NUS were Professor Kie Leong Teo (Dean, CDE), Professor Chye Kiang Heng (Deputy Dean, CDE), Professor Teng Chye Khoo (Director, NUS Cities), Professor Fong Chun Wah (Deputy Director, NUS Cities), Associate Professor H. Koon Wee (Visiting Associate Professor, Dept of Architecture and NUS Cities), Ms Yina Chua (Associate Director, NUS Cities) and Mr Chee Yuen Wan (Head, Office of Development, CDE). Representing the UAE Embassy were H.E. Jamal Al Suwaidi and Economic Researcher Mohamed Anas.
Professor Heng Chye Kiang, Deputy Dean of CDE, who was involved in the Dubai Future Councils and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, shared his experience working with the UAE and expanded on what the College of Design & Engineering offers to potential Emirati students.
H.E. Jamal shared the training needs for UAE's vision on Smart Sustainable Cities, and both faculties gave their insight as to how NUS can offer professional training for top-tier executives. Also mentioned during the discussion was the UAE's heaviest downpour in 75 years late last month, proving how timely the meeting was in drawing attention to climate change and climate solutions in urban development planning.
Thank you again to NUS Cities and CDE for a productive discussion!

In late January, UAE-Singapore Business Council was kindly invited by NUS Business School, National University of Singapore for a panel discussion on ‘Growing Emirati Business in Asia’ for delegates from the NAFIS UAE Leadership Programme. Initiated by the Prime Minister's Office - UAE Minister’s Office (PMO), NAFIS is a federal initiative aimed at increasing the competitiveness of Emirati human resources and empowering them to work in the private sector.
Part of 'Projects of the 50', the program aims to accelerate the UAE's development journey and boost the economy. UAESBC EXCO members First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), e& (Etisalat) and IFFCO Group joined the panel, with UAESBC President Dr Brian Shegar as moderator. The panelists discussed the nature of business in Singapore, challenges faced, their experience as leaders, and tips for future career paths.
One of the delegates posed a question about G2G initiatives between Singapore and the UAE, where Dr Shegar shared the efforts of the Abu Dhabi Singapore Business Forum, and the strong relationship between the UAE and Singapore Ministries of Foreign Affairs. He emphasised the importance of the UAE Embassy in Singapore in promoting investment into the UAE, and the strong ties the UAESBC holds with the Embassy in building interest in the country for Singaporean companies.
The panel concluded with NAFIS representatives presenting Dr. Brian and the panelists with tokens of appreciation. The UAESBC would like to thank the UAE PMO and NUS Business School for inviting our EXCO members to meet future leaders of the Emirates and share their insight.
The Patrons, EXCO members and Secretariat of the UAESBC would like to wish all our members and strategic partners a very prosperous Lunar New Year of the Dragon!
Last Tuesday, the UAESBC held its first EXCO gathering since 2019, bringing together and introducing both old and new members. The Council would like to extend our gratitude to UAESBC Patron and UAE Ambassador, His Excellency Jamal Alsuwaidi, for gracing us with his presence and commitment to the Council's efforts.
Graciously hosted by UAESBC President Dr Brian Shegar at his residence, our EXCO members wined and dined at an intimate dinner of delicious Indian cuisine. It was an opportunity to catch up and forge stronger connections in a cosy atmosphere. As this was our first EXCO get-together in almost five years, we look forward to hosting more frequent gatherings in future.
UAESBC Patron and UAE Ambassador, His Excellency Jamal Alsuwaidi, together with UAESBC President Dr Brian Shegar took the opportunity to present a token of appreciation to outgoing UAESBC Director, Ms Huda Aljunied, for her five years of service with the Council. We thank Ms Huda for her nurturing commitment to the UAESBC and wish her the very best as she embarks on her new journey in giving back to the community with the charity sector!
In anticipation for the UAESBC's calendar of events, the Council intends on maintaining connections between all our members; do keep a look out for an upcoming invitation to our inaugural Members-Only Networking Evening in February!
2023 was the year when Singaporeans welcomed back pre-Covid face-to-face functions and gatherings, having mastered self-tests and self-assessment of symptoms prior to attending large events. This allowed the Council to return to organising in-person events where UAESBC members and other target audience could fully benefit from impactful face-to-face interactions and networking. At the same time, we also made full use of video-conferencing tools when it was necessary to connect to UAE-based experts LIVE to the Singapore business community.
In conjunction with the COP28 UAE Climate Summit, was a major theme across our events and activities this year. Our Sustainable and Renewable Energy business delegation to the UAE in May was one of the first opportunities for Singapore companies to be exposed to COP28 plans and participation from the organiser and key summit participants in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. Discussions on sustainability also became the spotlight of our flagship workshop: , Petrochemical and Logistics Seminar 2023 where key industry players in the UAE and Singapore shared their ESG innovations and climate-conscious strategies. Nearer to the actual Climate Summit itself held at the end of November, we organised a second delegation on the theme of , focusing on startup companies who provide effective solutions to achieve ESG.
Our most impactful in-person event was indeed the UAESBC 5th Anniversary Charity Gala on 8th November where a total of SGD80,000 was raised for the Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC). The donations were accumulated from the sale of tickets, on-site auctions as well as a direct donation from the Council of SGD12,799. The event drew the attendance of around 175 guests who wined, dined and got to know about SNPC's great work supporting our inspirational para-athletes who are champions both in sport and in life.
The Council would like to thank our events sponsors who have allowed us to present such interesting and impactful events to you this year. Special thanks must go to our Strategic Partner, the UAE Embassy in Singapore, under the leadership of UAE Ambassador and UAESBC Patron, His Excellency Jamal Alsuwaidi who has kindly sponsored most of our key events this year.
We look forward to presenting you with a whole host of exciting and engaging events in 2024!
