“There is always hope. We must believe and do what is necessary to survive and live with cancer" ~ Mr Wee Say Sun, Cancer Warrior (Prostate Cancer)
A familiar face at SCS events, Mr Wee spreads positivity and hope wherever he goes through his actions. He found a vital source of support in the SCS Walnut Warriors Support Group – one of the many support groups facilitated by SCS. Mr Wee has personally experienced how SCS improves the quality of life for cancer patients 🤗
While receiving support by engaging in rehabilitation and psychosocial services provided by SCS, Mr Wee has given back to the cancer community as well. For his 70th Birthday, Mr Wee organised a special birthday party at the SCS Survivorship Centre @ Woods Square to launch his new project: The SCS Birthday Givebacks campaign. His birthday initiative aimed to raise support for the Singapore Cancer Society.

Teressa Tay's cancer journey began unexpectedly on her son's fifteenth birthday. Concealing her stage 3 thyroid cancer diagnosis, she revealed the news only after her son's exams ended, a fortnight later.
Surgery left her voice diminished, her hand paralyzed, and her smile gone. Despite recovering from her first round of treatments, Teressa faced a second cancer diagnosis seven years later, compounding her trials.
Turning to SCS, Teressa found solace through counselling and art therapy. Through these sessions, Teressa navigated through her feelings of grief, depression, and self-criticism, eventually finding purpose and fulfillment despite her ordeal. 🤗
Teressa's journey stands as a testament to the transformative impact of support and community in the face of life's greatest challenges 🫶💪

Despite standing on the precipice of a promising career in the tech industry, Michelle found herself unceremoniously thrust into a battle with breast cancer at the age of 29.
The diagnosis forever altered her professional trajectory. Returning to work proved an insurmountable challenge as fatigue and sleeplessness became constants, eventually prompting her to resign for the sake of her health.
Enrolling in SCS's Return to Work programme was a pivotal moment for Michelle. Inspired by her own struggles with food aversions during treatment, Michelle embarked on a mission to bridge the gap between dietary support and practical sustenance for those in need.
Now, she works part-time at an F&B establishment while helping to set up CAmpung Cafe @ SCS, a social space nestled in the heart of SCS’s headquarters aimed to provide cancer patients in the building a place to rest and enjoy a conversation over a nice, warm drink.

THE POWER OF YOUTH
You Zhen, a volunteer writer 💻for the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS), has published several pieces on the Society’s website and

On 1st June, Singapore Cancer Society held our first Cancer Survivors' Day Carnival, graced by Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Patron of SCS and President of the Republic of Singapore, as well as Ms. Jane Ittogi. With more than 400 cancer survivors coming together on this special day, triumph and happiness filled the air. 💪🏽🎉
The cancer survivors and their loved ones enjoyed exciting activities and performances to honour their resilience and celebrate their fight against cancer. We would like to thank all our partners who came to support the event and give the survivors a fun-filled experience. 💜
Concurrently, we officially launched the NCCS-SCS Rehabilitation Centre, a joint collaboration with the National Cancer Centre Singapore. It is the first tertiary rehabilitation facility in Singapore dedicated to providing multidisciplinary rehab care to newly diagnosed cancer patients who are preparing to start treatment, patients who are in the midst of treatment, and those who have just completed cancer treatment. Our partnership allows us to pool resources and expertise to provide the care needed for cancer patients. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease.
Additionally, SCS opened our CAmpung Cafe @ SCS, a befriending café supported by AstraZeneca’s Cancer Can Give, to provide a platform to rebuild our cancer survivors' confidence and capabilities to reintegrate into gainful employment in society by hiring cancer survivors as baristas and offering a space for dialogue and sharing within the cancer community. Located on Level 16 of the National Cancer Centre building, we invite cancer warriors who are waiting for their appointments or who need a place to rest to come up and enjoy a conversation over a nice, warm cuppa. 🫂🤗
We were so happy to see everyone have fun during the celebrations at Cancer Survivors’ Day and look forward to honouring our community again next year. Stay tuned to our page for more. 👀
Karen navigated through a relentless series of storms in a short span of two years, grappling with her mother's passing, husband's stroke, father's cancer diagnosis, and her own battle with cervical cancer.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, Karen found inspiration and strength in the memories of her late friend Joyce, who bravely faced cancer. Joyce's resilience and courage served as a powerful reminder for Karen to persevere, even when things seemed impossible.
Supported by her loved ones and the community at SCS, Karen found the fortitude to overcome adversity.
Counselling sessions at SCS equipped her with
stress-management and resilience-building tools, empowering her not only to persevere but also to give back by sharing her story on Project Lionheart and undergoing training to become an SCS patient ambassador.
Karen's remarkable strength, courage, and resilience were recognized through Singhealth's Inspirational Patient Award in 2023, and her journey is a testament to the power of hope and resilience in the fight against cancer.

Did you know❓ Bell-ringing ceremonies to signal the end of cancer treatment is a practice that originated in the US more than 20 years ago. 🔔 Today, it’s not unusual to hear a bell ringing in radiotherapy or chemotherapy departments in hospitals internationally. As we mark Cancer Survivors’ Day this year, we have adopted the “Ring the Bell” to mark a milestone achieved whether it marks the conclusion of a challenging treatment or simply a day filled with strength and hope. ✨
Yesterday, our cancer warriors and guardians are invited to embrace the moment and ring the bell. Each toll signifies a narrative of victory over adversity, a declaration that “Cancer Never had Me.” Capturing the essence of these moments, participants are encouraged to mark the occasion with a photograph while using these words of encouragement, a tangible reminder of their journey and the community standing with them.
Beyond personal triumphs, this ritual serves as a beacon of encouragement for those still battling, reminding them of the resilience within. Together we celebrate resilience, courage, and the unwavering spirit that propels us forward!💪🏻
Today, over 400 of our survivors and their loved ones gathered, not merely to reflect on past struggles, but to honour the resilience that led to triumph during our Cancer Suvivors’ Day Celebrations. It was a day characterised by profound connections, uplifting narratives, and the steadfast support of our community. Amongst them stood Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam (.sg), President of the Republic of Singapore and Patron of the Singapore Cancer Society and his wife, Ms Jane Ittogi.
President Tharman’s presence carried more than symbolic weight; it resonated with a personal commitment to our cause. His genuine warmth permeated every interaction, from sharing smiles with survivors to inaugurating the NCCS-SCS Rehabilitation Centre. The NCCS-SCS Rehabilitation Centre is the first tertiary rehabilitation facility in Singapore dedicated to providing multi-disciplinary rehab care to newly diagnosed cancer patients who are preparing to start treatment, patients who are in the midst of treatment, and those who have just completed cancer treatment.
The day commenced with vigour, as survivors showcased their spirit through a captivating flash mob performance. 🎉 It served as a poignant reminder that amidst adversity, joy and fortitude can thrive. We also unveiled our Legacy of Light installation, where each glimmer represented the resilience and optimism that define our survivors. Apart from the celebrations and fringe activities, we officially opened the CAmpung Café, a haven where warriors found solace in shared experiences over coffee. It transcended its role as a café, becoming a nexus of understanding and empowerment.
Engaging with cancer warriors, their families, SCS beneficiaries, participants, and the wider community present at Cancer Survivors’Day, President Tharman exemplified unwavering support in our battle against cancer and showcased that this journey is a collective endeavour, where support, inspiration, and celebration punctuate every step forward. 💜
A heartfelt thank you to President Tharman for standing with us in this fight! 🤗
Cheers to 2024! 🎉 As we enter the new year, SCS is proud to mark 60 years in our fight
against cancer! 👏🏻 Here's to more victories, breakthroughs, and moments of strength in the future to come.
