National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science

To be among the world's best in science education and research

From modest beginnings in 1929 as a single department in Raffles College, with just ten students and three staff, the Faculty of Science has evolved into one of the largest Faculties in the National University of Singapore. There are now more than 4,500 undergraduate and 1,300 graduate students, 500 academic faculty, and 300 administrative, technical and support staff.

For LEW Bo Cong, a self-confessed introvert, his exchange programme at the University of Sydney did not just bring him out of his shell.

Bo Cong, who majors in Life Sciences and minors in Interactive Media Development, gained exposure to a different academic culture and had the opportunity to pack in a lifetime worth of experiences by immersing himself in local festivals, cultural and campus activities.

“The experience helped me to better appreciate the depth and breadth of my major,” he says and it also “widened my social circle and understanding of different cultures and local customs.”

In the 1990s and before, science education and research at NUS were largely confined to classrooms, lecture theatres, laboratories and libraries.

Today, with advanced technology and more resources, our educators are well-placed to teach and bring scientific concepts to life. National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science offers our students many experiential learning opportunities, such as internships, study abroad programmes, and research and industrial attachments. These enable our students to integrate classroom learning with collaborative projects and immersive learning overseas that connect to real-world contexts.

Science research has also made immense progress over the years. Our scientists have made advances in fundamental as well as translational science, with a focus on solutions that address real-world problems in areas ranging from climate change to advanced materials, biomedical science and food security, and more.

NUS President Prof TAN Eng Chye (Mathematics, 1985), says, “Every scientific discipline has the potential to create great impact.”

Catch our interview with Prof Tan, where he shares his perspectives on how science education and research have transformed over the years.

In the final part of our series, we discover what drives our valedictorians towards the pinnacle of academic success. What lessons have shaped their journeys and how will this guide their future endeavours? Be inspired by our valedictorians!

CHUA Ching Leong, who earned his MSc in Statistics, reflects on the programme's balance between theoretical rigour and practical applications. The introductory core courses ensured a solid foundation, with elective courses building on it. He says, “Collaborating with peers from different backgrounds and ages showed how different perspectives can enrich our work." The programme also developed his capacity to learn independently through discussions beyond the curriculum.

Chemistry undergraduate valedictorian Joey CHNG took the opportunity to participate in diverse opportunities, such as Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS), Undergraduate Professional Internship Programme (UPIP) and Final Year Internship (FYI) which significantly shaped her academic journey. She says, “These experiential learning opportunities provided invaluable firsthand experiences that led towards greater clarity of my interests. This in turn enables me to make more informed career choices.” Her time with the NUS Students’ Science Club also enhanced her adaptability, as well as leadership and time management skills.

PhD in Biological Sciences’ Dr CHIM Chee Kong says, “During my learning journey, I came to realise that different scientific disciplines have more similarities than differences. More often than not, solving the mysteries of life requires a multidisciplinary approach.” Working with his peers and professors from various disciplines also shed light on the impact and importance of collaboration towards achieving better research outcomes.

Repost from National University of Singapore

From a young age, the twins have always shared a common interest in the sciences, and were drawn to both the novelty and relevance of food science and technology to everyday life.

“Food science is relevant to a lot of people and there’s a human connection. For example, I can learn about healthy eating and, in turn, teach others to do the same,” said older brother Aquila (left).

“Food safety and security are issues we cannot run away from in the future,” says .chs student KWOK Jing Lin.

With this in mind, she decided to pursue a major in Food Science and Technology (FST) which brings her one step closer to her interests and concerns.

The FST undergraduate degree programme covers the full spectrum of the food supply chain, focusing on food quality and safety, new food product innovation, food processing and nutrition. Its multidisciplinary approach brings together knowledge and skills across diverse domains such as biology, physical sciences and engineering, preparing undergraduates to formulate solutions for food security, safety and sustainability.

Find out more about Jing Lin’s research into food pathogens and food spoilage as well as her leadership of the NUS’ FoodTech Challenge which drew over 360 participants from around the world to develop food concepts that address contemporary problems faced by the food industry.

Jing Lin, a recipient of the Singapore Sustainability Scholarship, will join the Singapore Food Agency when she graduates.

While valedictorian FANG Xinyu knew little about mathematics as a college subject, her interest in the subject was fired by her school teachers who revealed “the beauty of mathematics” through their classes.

Xinyu’s inspiring journey is not just one of academic distinction - but also an inspiring journey of meaningful contributions beyond the classroom.

She says, “An insatiable curiosity is a key factor in academic success: an unquenchable desire to learn and understand more about the subject. Find your curiosity, and it will guide you to where you want to be.”

Congratulations, Xinyu! We’re very proud of you!

Anyone can indulge in sweet treats - if they are willing to sweat out the consequences at the gym.

However, Food Science and Technology alumna Dr JIN Xiaoxuan believes that everyone can have their sweets, without worrying about their health!

AuroraFood, which she co-founded, utilises technology which was inspired by a discovery in 2013 on a group of bioactive compounds from cereals and berries that slow down carbohydrate digestion. This enables the production of baked goods and desserts with a slow sugar release without the use of sugar alternatives, catering to diabetics as well as health-conscious consumers.

AuroraFood recently launched its specialty YU (屿) Cookies.

Dr Jin says, “Our technology transforms sugary indulgences into healthier and diabetic-friendly options! We are in the process of rolling out this technology for application in the bakery, confectionary, and beverage industries.”
