Repost from In the final part of our series, we discover what drives our valedictorians towards the pinnacle of academic success. What lessons have shaped their journeys and how will this guide their future endeavours? Be inspired by our valedictorians!
CHUA Ching Leong, who earned his MSc in Statistics, reflects on the programme's balance between theoretical rigour and practical applications. The introductory core courses ensured a solid foundation, with elective courses building on it. He says, “Collaborating with peers from different backgrounds and ages showed how different perspectives can enrich our work." The programme also developed his capacity to learn independently through discussions beyond the curriculum.
Chemistry undergraduate valedictorian Joey CHNG took the opportunity to participate in diverse opportunities, such as Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS), Undergraduate Professional Internship Programme (UPIP) and Final Year Internship (FYI) which significantly shaped her academic journey. She says, “These experiential learning opportunities provided invaluable firsthand experiences that led towards greater clarity of my interests. This in turn enables me to make more informed career choices.” Her time with the NUS Students’ Science Club also enhanced her adaptability, as well as leadership and time management skills.
PhD in Biological Sciences’ Dr CHIM Chee Kong says, “During my learning journey, I came to realise that different scientific disciplines have more similarities than differences. More often than not, solving the mysteries of life requires a multidisciplinary approach.” Working with his peers and professors from various disciplines also shed light on the impact and importance of collaboration towards achieving better research outcomes.

In July 2024, 48 undergraduates selected from various universities across the region participated in the inaugural NUS Science Summer Institute (SSI) 2024 - Chemistry Thematic Track. The students were immersed in deep discussions at plenary and thematic lectures during the intensive 10-day STEM immersion, also mastered some skills from hours of practical work in NUS Chemistry laboratories. Beyond academic learning, the SSI participants also interacted through social activities with local and oversea students. They forged new friendships with like-minded young people in NUS Science and UTown campus. The SSI programme culminated in the last two days as the SSI Symposium, where participants shared about their research work in either oral or poster presentation. Congratulations to all the symposium presenters for their remarkable accomplishments! We hope the SSI programme would help to cultivate a shared perspective and values among young talents in the region. We sincerely appreciate the generous supports from Far East Organization, SymAsia Singapore Fund – QQCK Foundation, and Micron Semiconductor Asia Operations Pte Ltd, for providing Study Awards that have facilitated the diverse participation of SSI 2024!
