Are you like me, an absent-minded gardener? 🤭 Someone who likes plants, but caused many to wither, due to not remembering to water them in time?

A terrarium is perfect for you! You just have to water the plants once, cover the container, and the plants can survive many weeks without you having to water them again.

How does it work?

A terrarium follows the principles of the Water Cycle. Water in the damp soil will gain heat from the surroundings 🌞 to evaporate as water vapour. Water vapour escapes from the stomata of the plants 🪴 as well. Collectively, this warmer water vapour rises and comes into contact with the cooler inner surface of the container, loses heat to it and condenses into tiny water droplets 💦 The water droplets will then drip back into the soil for the roots of the plants to take in again for survival.

There we go! A mini water cycle 💧

Busting misconceptions #1.1

Remember our previous post? Overcrowding can lead to plants growing taller as they need to compete for light to make food. Does taller = fitter and stronger?

Judge for yourself 😊 These pictures are taken a couple of days after the initial one.

After some time, due to the intense competition, the plants in the crowding pot will eventually have a lack of resources. This lead to them withering and dying; compared to the ones growing happily and healthily in the pot with only 5 plants.

Busting misconceptions #1

Question: I have 2 pots of seeds; Pot A has 20 seeds while Pot B has only 5. Which pot has seeds that will germinate and grow into seedlings which are taller?

Most will answer: Pot B.

Real answer: Pot A.
Explanation: The seedlings in Pot A experience more overcrowding, increasing their competition for sunlight. Thus, they grow taller to trap more light for photosynthesis 🌞 🍃

Fun fact - Many adults do not know this as well. Test your parents! 😄

What are the ingredients for good progress in your exams?

1. 1 cup of confidence
2. 1 cup of encouragement from parents/teachers
3. 1 cup of knowledge of how-to-revise

Majority of the students I've come across have the capability of understanding concepts. However, many knows WHAT to study, but not HOW to study.

On top of that, exam anxiety is real. Some do very well in their day to day work but somehow that doesn't translate into good grades in their exams.

Empower your child by giving them the confidence, encouragement them (not just nagging 😆😆), and if you find them stuck in a rut, seek for help. Most teachers are able to "diagnosed" their problems by understanding how they do their usual revision. Nip the problem in the bud.

C's work in class has always been above average but her exam results fluctuate quite a bit. She only started to approach me for advice after SA1 in P6.

She came to me after her prelims in August, feeling very down as she put in a lot of effort but she's still not achieving her aim. After chatting with her, I realised that she's not revising the smart way, so she ended up wasting time when she could have achieved more if she had done her revision more wisely. On top of that, she's usually very stressed when she's doing her exams. So I talked to her and encouraged her to clear her mind and just do normally, like how she would usually do her work.

Just before the PSLE Science paper, I returned her the last piece of work we did in class. She did very well, despite the many challenging questions I've included on purpose.

And then came the PSLE results release day. She got an AL 2, a vast improvement from her prelim results of AL 5. I don't usually focus on their grades, but I would like to showcase how much a student can improve, once they are able to obtain the 3 ingredients needed for good progress 😊

Another year, another batch of graduating students.

Each and every one of you are special to me and I'm so honoured to have played a part in your primary school life.

Again, I've blocked out the marks as I would like to focus on celebrating their effort and hard work. Seriously, you guys did so well 💕💕 I'm so extremely proud of you.

To all P6s and their parents, take a well-deserved break! 💕

I see many P6s still struggling with the concept of matter when it comes to questions like the one I've attached. Just remember to go back to basics - the concepts of mass and volume. And always take note: The capacity of the container is a constant. To check, always add up the final volume of all substances; it must always be the same as the capacity of the container.
P/S. Please do not memorise these tables 😅 As long as you understand the concept, you should be able to do any similar question.
