โ€œWhy do I keep doing this?โ€
โ€œHow does this keep happening to me?โ€

You might ask yourself these questions when you feel trapped in patterns that create problems in your life and keep you from achieving your goals. Despite trying to make changes, you somehow end up in the same place, time and time again. If this sounds familiar, you could be sabotaging yourself. Self-sabotage refers to behaviours or thought patterns that hold you back and prevent you from doing what you want to do, hence hindering your own success (Healthline, 2019).

How does one fall into the slippery slope of excessive substance use? During substance use, the brainโ€™s rewards system gets activated - eliciting a feeling of pleasure and euphoria. As such, this rewarding feeling that users are experiencing may become so profound that they neglect their normal day-to-day activities just to facilitate their substance use, causing major disruption to their everyday lives.

Find out more about Substance Use Disorder: its signs and symptoms, long-term effects on individuals and treatment interventions.

Earlier this month, our co-founder and principal psychologist, Ms Jeslyn Lim, had the privilege of meeting with Mr Piet Jensen, the Managing Director of Yes We Can Youth Clinics, one of our international mental healthcare partners.

Based in the Netherlands, they primarily work with teenagers and young adults aged 13-25 years struggling with mental health disorders, addictions and behavioural problems.

With a team of over 400 allied health and mental health professionals, as well as unique residential treatment programmes, weโ€™re pleased to have been able to gain more insights about their workings. We also had the opportunity to share more about Singaporeโ€™s mental health scene and commemorate our shared commitment in empowering individuals struggling with mental health issues.

Trauma can have long-term effect on one's emotional and physical well-being, and if left unaddressed, it could develop into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Globally, the prevalence of eating disorders have increased from 3.4% to 7.8% between 2000 and 2018. (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2019). In Singapore, such cases are rising, especially among young children and youths.

Despite improved research on this topic, eating disorders are vastly misunderstood by the general population and they are still associated with many myths and negative stereotypes today. This week, we want to shed some light and spread some awareness on these conditions.

Eating Disorders are complex conditions that does not stem from a single cause. The more you know, the more you can help.
