Taiwan Pavilion opens at Paris Cultural Olympiad to great fanfare - Focus Taiwan Nearly 4,000 spectators from different corners of the world braved the torrential rain on Saturday to celebrate the opening of the Taiwan Pavilion, which aims to showcase the country's soft power, at the Paris Cultural Olympiad.

Taiwan and Thailand are set to implement a new bilateral investment agreement (BIA) later this year, pending Executive Yuan review and Legislative Yuan ratification. Thailand would become the fifth country to sign such an agreement with Taiwan since 2016, aiming to update outdated investment frameworks to meet modern international standards. The new BIA promises enhanced transparency, streamlined services, and mechanisms for resolving investment disputes, reflecting the growing economic ties between the two nations. Trade between Taiwan and Thailand has significantly expanded, with Thailand emerging as Taiwan's leading ASEAN trading partner.

A Guatemalan congressional delegation, led by Congress President Nery Ramos, will visit Taiwan from July 15 to 19. The group will meet with President Lai Ching-te and visit key sites, including the Legislative Yuan and the Taiwan Southern Science Park. This marks Ramos' first diplomatic trip since his January election. Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung will host a banquet for the delegation, highlighting the strong ties between Guatemala and Taiwan.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the opening of a state trade office in Taipei to enhance cooperation and demonstrate support for Taiwan. This is Texas' second foreign office, following one in Mexico. Abbott emphasized the global significance of the Texas-Taiwan relationship and the economic benefits of the partnership. He signed an Economic Development Statement of Intent with Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs Kuo Jyh-huei, aiming to strengthen economic ties, expand trade, create jobs, and promote collaboration in semiconductors and energy resilience.

Taiwan ranked eighth on Switzerland’s IMD world competitiveness list, despite falling two spots from last year, outperforming the U.S., China, and Japan. Taiwan maintained its leading position among economies with over 20 million people for the fourth consecutive year. The drop was mainly due to weak global demand impacting its manufacturing sector, leading to a lower economic performance ranking. However, Taiwan ranked high in business efficiency (6th), government efficiency (8th), and infrastructure (10th). The National Development Council attributed economic challenges to global inflation and high interest rates but expressed optimism about Taiwan’s steady growth due to recovering global trade and exports.

The festival aims to showcase independent filmmakers and foster global connections. The trio aims to create a two-way cultural exchange, bringing international brands and events to Taiwan.

Bringing Sundance to Taiwan: A celebration of independent film and culture - Focus Taiwan "We want people to fall in love with Taiwan," Kevin Lin (林士斌), an entrepreneur best known for co-founding the video live-streaming service Twitch, said regarding bringing the Sundance Film Festival Asia to Taiwan in a recent interview with CNA.

The first Taiwan Expo in Europe, held in Berlin, featured over 100 Taiwanese businesses collaborating with European counterparts, focusing on digital and green transition opportunities. Organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), the three-day event aimed to generate over $50 million in business opportunities, with themes including eco-mobility, smart healthcare, and AI. A significant highlight was the Taiwan-EU Semiconductor Forum, attracting about 200 participants from key firms like TSMC, Merck, and MediaTek, discussing semiconductor supply chain management and automotive electronics. Veteran diplomat Raymond Greene will take over as the top U.S. representative in Taiwan at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) next summer, succeeding Sandra Oudkirk. Greene, who was AIT's deputy director from 2018 to 2021, has 28 years of experience in Asia-Pacific diplomacy, including roles in Chengdu, Okinawa, Manila, the National Security Council, and APEC. Most recently, he served as deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Tokyo. Greene is fluent in Mandarin and Japanese and is married to a Taiwanese woman.

Frank Huang, chairman of Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC), met with French President Emmanuel Macron to propose AI development cooperation. Attending a Paris round table on May 13, Huang emphasized the success of U.S. companies like IBM, Microsoft, Google, Apple, AMD, and Nvidia in leveraging Taiwan's advanced IT platform. He suggested that France could similarly benefit from Taiwan's tech expertise to enhance technology upgrades and cost control. The round table, part of the Choose France summit to attract foreign investment, included representatives from major U.S. and European companies and sovereign wealth funds from Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Powerchip chairman meets Macron, proposes Taiwan-France AI cooperation - Focus Taiwan Frank Huang (黃崇仁), chairman of Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC), met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday and proposed cooperation in artificial intelligence development, according to his company.

The India Summer Festival, organized by the India Taipei Association, will take place on May 25-26 at Huashan 1914 Creative Park in Taiwan. The festival, running from 4-8 p.m. daily, will be the largest Indian cultural event in Taiwan, featuring 30 music and dance performances, including Bollywood and classical Indian dances. Global Finance Magazine's latest report titled "Richest Countries in the World 2024" ranked Taiwan as the 14th richest nation globally out of 190 countries and territories, based on gross domestic product (GDP) per capita adjusted for purchasing power. This placement maintained Taiwan's position from the previous year but advanced one spot in Asia. The top positions were dominated by Luxembourg, Macau, Ireland, and Singapore, with Taiwan ranking sixth in Asia and second in East Asia behind Macau. The rankings were determined by considering per capita GDP adjusted for purchasing power parity, with data sourced from the International Monetary Fund's World Economic Outlook, April 2024.
