NDC to issue digital nomad visas - Taipei Times 19/07/2024

Taiwan's National Development Council plans to introduce a "digital nomad" visa aimed at attracting global remote workers, responding to the increased prevalence of remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar policies in Japan, South Korea, and Thailand have inspired Taiwan's initiative, which aims to allow digital nomads to stay for up to six months, extendable by three months without legislative changes. Taiwan also seeks to ease permanent residency restrictions for high-skilled foreign professionals, proposing a "global elite visa" for those earning at least NT$6 million annually. These efforts are part of Taiwan's strategy to enhance its talent pool, boost domestic tourism, and stimulate economic growth by attracting 120,000 foreign talents by 2028.

Taiwan ranks 8th on world competitiveness list | Taiwan News | Jun. 18, 2024 10:32 24/06/2024

Taiwan ranked eighth on Switzerland’s IMD world competitiveness list, despite falling two spots from last year, outperforming the U.S., China, and Japan. Taiwan maintained its leading position among economies with over 20 million people for the fourth consecutive year. The drop was mainly due to weak global demand impacting its manufacturing sector, leading to a lower economic performance ranking. However, Taiwan ranked high in business efficiency (6th), government efficiency (8th), and infrastructure (10th). The National Development Council attributed economic challenges to global inflation and high interest rates but expressed optimism about Taiwan’s steady growth due to recovering global trade and exports.
