Ifakara Health Institute invites applications from qualified and experienced candidates to fill the position of Laboratory Scientist within the Molecular Surveillance of Malaria in Tanzania Phase 2 (MSMT2) project.
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, such as Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Laboratory Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, or other relevant fields. Applicants should also have experience in genomics and practical skills in various molecular biology techniques, with at least three years of proven experience in a similar field, which is essential and critical for this post.

Key achievements in HIV care
The CDCI has been providing vital healthcare to over 12,000 people living with HIV in Kilombero, Ulanga, and Malinyi districts since its founding. The One Stop Clinic, in particular, offers a comprehensive approach, integrating HIV, tuberculosis, and other services under one roof, with advanced diagnostics and a reference lab for viral load testing.
As non-communicable diseases (NCDs) rise in rural Tanzania, CDCI is broadening its scope to tackle these challenges head-on.

Reflections on two decades of progress
During his opening remarks, Kilombero District Commissioner Dunstan Kyobya commended the Chronic Diseases Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI) for its remarkable efforts in enhancing healthcare access in Kilombero. He encouraged greater community engagement to build on this success. 🙌 💪
CDCI Clinical Research Coordinator, Maja Weisser, emphasized the significance of the clinic’s achievements over the years, stating: “This is an important moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and to explore new strategies to address the ongoing challenges faced by people living with HIV and those needing chronic care for NCDs.”

Celebrating 20 yrs of HIV, chronic disease care in rural Tanzania 🇹🇿
We, at the Ifakara Health Institute, have joined the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) and other partners in celebrating 20 years of the Chronic Disease Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI)! 🙌
Since 2004, the CDCI has provided care to over 12,000 people living with HIV and continues to expand its services to address tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases in rural Tanzania.
At the anniversary event, key stakeholders discussed the clinic's achievements, such as the One Stop Clinic for HIV-infected mothers and children, and looked ahead to the challenges of integrating chronic care into rural healthcare systems.
A big thank you to our international partners, including the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) and Basel-Stadt 🤝, for their continued support. Together, we’re making a lasting impact! 💪

Field interviewers empowered to evaluate food security
🚜 From October 8-12, Ifakara Health Institute successfully trained 41 field interviewers for the project, an initiative launched in January 2024 to enhance food security for smallholder farmers across five key regions in Tanzania. 🌾
Funded by SNV Netherlands Development Organization, aims to transform agriculture and improve the livelihoods of vulnerable farming households in central-northern and southern highlands regions. 🌍💪

Today, the ViALLIN project Ifakara Health Institute gathered stakeholders for a workshop, where they explored how artificial intelligence can help inspect and monitor the durability of bed nets in a faster and more accurate way. 👨👩👧👦 🛏🦟

Reducing calcium supplement dosage for pregnant women 🤰
A recent study in Tanzania highlights the struggles pregnant women face in adhering to calcium supplementation. While many are willing to take them, concerns such as pill size and three daily doses hinder intake. 📉💊
Overcoming these challenges is vital for improving maternal health as scientists recommend integrating calcium supplementation into routine antenatal care and reducing the number of daily doses. 🌟 📊

Improving rabies vaccine supply in Tanzania 💉
Rabies still causes about 800 deaths in Tanzania every year. Kennedy Lushasi, Joel Changalucha and colleagues at the Ifakara Health Institute and partners have shared ways to improve access to life-saving Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), a treatment given after potential rabies exposure to prevent the disease.
📄Their policy brief outlines steps to make vaccines easier to get, especially in areas that need them the most.
