Teaching as Resistance: Ukrainian Educators Reflect on Their Role in Wartime

One and a half years since the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian educators continue to teach classes, conduct and share their research, and publish papers and monographs. As early as March 2022, only a few weeks after the beginning of the all-out war, universities resumed their online classes. As the educational process continued, Russia bombed and shelled 3,758 educational institutions, of which 363 are now completely destroyed.

The Ukraine in European Dialogue program at the IWM is committed to supporting educators and scholars who remain in Ukraine and continue their work, which they regard as a key act of resistance to Russian terrorism. Thanks to the generosity of the City of Vienna, in summer 2023 we were able to invite university educators from different regions in Ukraine to spend two months as UiED Visiting Fellows. In this series, we share their stories of education and resistance, teaching and working under Russian fire.

З 30 червня по 02 липня 2023 року відбудеться ІІ Літня школа підвищення кваліфікації "ШІ+освіта +наука".

Мета літньої школи: розкриття перспективних підходів до освітніх і наукових застосувань ШІ та висвітлення потенційних проблем етичного і безпечного використання різних моделей ШІ.

Програма передбачає два етапи:
І етап: офлайн (30.06-02.07.2023 (м. Тернопіль, Тернопільська область) - виступи спікерів з інтерактивом, тренінги, індивідуальні та групові заняття, спілкування у форматі «євро-кафе», проєктне завдання.

ІІ етап: дистанційно (03.07 - 20.09.2023) - виконання проєктного завдання та звітна зустріч змішаного формату.

Humor Research Project – NEOlinguists

One important source of Ukrainian society's surprisingly strong resilience in the face of Russia's full-scale invasion has been a strong national identity, an overarching attachment to one's homeland above ethnolinguistic ties and regional differences which was, in turn, further strengthened by societal consolidation in response to the invasion. Volodymyr Kulyk will discuss the impact of the war on the salience and content of Ukrainian national identity. Based on original data from a nationwide survey and a series of focus group discussions in different parts of the country, Kulyk will demonstrate that not only has Ukrainian identity become more salient compared to other attachments, but it has also come to mean a stronger embrace of beliefs that have traditionally been associated with Ukrainian ethnic belonging. These beliefs, such as hostility toward Russia, adherence to the nationalist narrative of Ukrainian history, and support for the predominance of the Ukrainian language in all social domains, are now increasingly accepted by people of different ethnic backgrounds and language preferences, thus making the Ukrainian nation both more civic and more nationalist. Katherine Younger will introduce the speaker and moderate the ensuing Q&A.

Fourteenth Annual Conference of the Research Network on the History of the Idea of Europe

A basic tension inherent in any idea of Europe is that it links some set of “cultural values” (H. Joas/K. Wiegandt) to a geographical space on the western fringe of the Asian landmass, but at the same time allows for a significant degree of internal diversity, the boundaries of which are constantly shifting and disputed. One case in point is the history of religion. Arguably, the denominational plurality in the wake of the Reformation could still be subsumed by contemporaries under the umbrella of European Christianity, while the distinction from the Orthodox Churches proved more divisive in this respect. In recent years, the Brexit debate or the current Russo-Ukrainian War show the continuing force of visions of centre and periphery in this context, both on the territorial and metaphorical level. The variety of ways in which such topographies of cultural values have served to underpin notions of difference and belonging in the light of Europeanness are at the core of this conference.

What Europe is or should be is particularly controversial in conflicts about inclusion and exclusion, but also in discourses about self-images in various regions of the continent. Historians and sociologists like Jürgen Osterhammel, Wolfgang Schmale, or Peter Wagner have emphasised the pivotal role played by “mental maps” – in the sense of value-laden geographies – in struggles over political domination, cultural hierarchies, and economic dependence within a space of interactions and mutual perceptions labelled ‘Europe’. And they stress the enduring nature of these cognitive and normative patterns over the centuries.

In probing this multi-faceted field of research, the Innsbruck conference aims to bring together several disciplines ranging from history, intellectual history and art history over cultural and literary studies to musicology and anthropology. We will explore how and by whom an overarching concept of Europe was developed, politically enforced, and negotiated in the arts and media. The focus lies on a comparative view of the relationships between imagined European centres and regions that have at various points in time been regarded as being on the periphery of Europe: be it in geographical terms (e.g. Russia, the British Isles, Scandinavia, the Balkans) or in other respects such as political system, religious creed, economic performance etc. How was the tension between nation building and continental integration understood? When and how were traditions of European values invented and established? And who was excluded from or by these processes?

Topics might include – but are by no means limited to:
- Discourses of inclusion in or exclusion from a European ‘centre’ or a hegemonic model of Europeanness in political, social, cultural, economic etc. terms
- Representations of borders/fringes of Europe in philosophy, arts and literature
- Images of Russia as European or non-European (seen from outside and inside)
- The Balkans as an ‘internal other’
- Images of Northern Europe’s specific cultural legacy (British Isles, Scandinavia) and these regions’ contribution to an idea of Europe
- Representations of Europe in its colonial and imperial environments

📌 Окремою частиною програми є шість нетворкінгових зустрічей для представників сфери культури з України та Франції за різними напрямками: музейна справа, пам’яткоохоронна сфера, кураторство сучасного мистецтва, журналістика, освіта у сфері культури, книжкова сфера. За результатами зустрічей у Франції відбудеться шість секторальних круглих столів в Україні, де учасники поділяться здобутими досвідом, контактами та можливостями.

Проєкт Українська Весна є ініціативою Українського інституту в партнерстві з Ambassade d'Ukraine en France / Посольство України у Франції та відбувається за підтримки Благодійного фонду Dofa fund: cultural networking та виконується за підтримки Агентства США з міжнародного розвитку (USAID - US Agency for International Development).
