The Kyiv Perennial will open in Berlin from February 23–25, 2024, symbolically marking the 10th anniversary of the Maidan Revolution and the 10th year of the Russian war against Ukraine. It is a continuation of the pan-European edition of the Kyiv Biennial 2023 with exhibitions at various venues and public programs in a number of Ukrainian and EU cities. The project, conceived by the VCRC, the organizer of the Kyiv Biennial, and nGbK Berlin, together with Between Bridges and Prater Galerie, is made possible by a cooperation with the Kulturstiftung des Bundes.

The newly conceived exhibition and an event program reinterpret the idea of the biennial as a collective, long-term endeavor against the backdrop of political, social, and cultural survival: “Perennial” means “lasting”, “enduring”, or “persisting”. By incorporating investigative, research-based, and documentary artistic practices, the Kyiv Perennial engages the multi-layered realities of war. The artistic and discursive contributions address the social and political polarization in European societies, ecological destruction caused by military conflict, decolonial tendencies in contemporary Eastern European culture and politics, as well as war trauma, flight and displacement.

The Berlin edition of the Kyiv Biennial commences with a three-day opening weekend: On February 23, the Kyiv Perennial opens at nGbK on Alexanderplatz, two further openings follow at Between Bridges and nGbK Hellersdorf on February 24 and 25. The fourth part of the exhibition opens with a symposium organized by Prater Galerie in May 2024.

Київська переніале відкриється у Берліні 23–25 лютого 2024 року на 10-річчя революції Майдану та 10-ту річницю російської війни проти України. Це продовження пан’європейської Київської бієнале 2023 з виставками в різних локаціях та публічними програмами у кількох містах України та ЄС. Проєкт розроблений організатором Київської бієнале – Центром візуальної культури (ЦВК), а також neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK) разом із Between Bridges та галереєю Prater, і став можливим у співпраці із Kulturstiftung des Bundes (Німецьким федеральним культурним фондом).

Нова концепція виставки та програми подій переосмислює ідею бієнале як колективної, довготривалої діяльності на тлі політичного, соціального та культурного виживання: «переніальний» означає «тривалий», «витривалий», «наполегливий». Художньо-дискурсивна програма порушуватиме проблеми соціальної та політичної поляризації в європейських суспільствах, спричинених війною екологічних руйнувань, деколоніальних тенденцій у сучасній східноєвропейській культурі та політиці, а також воєнної травми та переміщення.

Берлінська частина Київської бієнале розпочнеться з триденного відкриття: 23 лютого Київська бієнале відкриється в nGbK на Александерплац, а 24 та 25 лютого відбудуться ще два відкриття – у Between Bridges та в nGbK в Геллерсдорфі. Четверта частина виставки відкриється разом із симпозіумом у галереї Prater у травні 2024 року.

The fifth edition of Kyiv Biennial will be international and will take place in Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Uzhgorod, Vienna, Warsaw and Berlin.

In view of the brutal Russian attack on Ukraine, a comprehensive biennial project in Kyiv long seemed deeply uncertain, if not impossible. But, with a cascade of openings – starting in Kyiv and Vienna in October 2023, finishing in Berlin in 2024 – the fifth Kyiv Biennial will take place. This Biennial edition is conceived as a European event, with dispersed exhibitions and public programs in a number of Ukrainian and EU cities, and realized in partnership with leading European institutions in the field of contemporary art.

Instead of abandoning the project and thus submitting to the logic of war that attacks everything civil, the 2023 Biennial draws upon its founding idea: that of being a multi-centric initiative in a European, interconnected and solidary form. Art institutions in Ukraine (in Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Uzhhorod) organize presentations and events in their endangered yet working infrastructures. Despite the late start of planning due to the war, museums and exhibition halls in Vienna (the main exhibition spot), Warsaw and Berlin, together with venues in other European cities, have freed up their spaces and platforms for exhibitions and events with Ukrainian and international artists as well as for discursive, performative and educational activities.

В умовах нищівної війни Росії проти України перспектива комплексного втілення бієнале у Києві довго виглядала дуже непевно – чи й зовсім нереалістично. Однак п’ята Київська бієнале відбудеться – її відкриття пройде у низці міст, починаючи з Києва у жовтні 2023-го й закінчуючи Берліном у 2024 році. Цей випуск Київської бієнале задумано як пан’європейську подію з виставками і публічною програмою у містах України та ЄС і реалізовано у партнерстві з провідними інституціями у сфері сучасного мистецтва.

Українські інституції в Києві, Івано-Франківську й Ужгороді та виставкові зали Відня, Варшави й Берліна надали платформи для виставок і подій за участю українських митців та їхніх колег з інших країн, а ще – для дискусій, перформансів і освітніх заходів. Разом ці інституції складають кураторський консорціум, що спільно творить концептуальну основу, у межах якої формуються локальні програми Київської бієнале.

This spring, we are entering the second year of the full-scale war, witnessing the irreversible damage it has caused to many dimensions of life. It is with grimness that we look at the state of Ukrainian nature.

By the end of 2022, more than 12000 square kilometers of Ukraine’s nature reserves have become a war zone. The United Nations Environment Programme logged more than 2000 cases of severe environmental damage, air pollution incidents and contamination of ground and surface water. 450 000 hectares of forest are on the occupied territory or in the hostilities zone. Approximately 600 animal species and 750 species of plants and fungi, some of them included in the Ukrainian Red Book of endangered species, have come under threat.

This year, together with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, ESI will focus on supporting art projects that speak about Ukraine here and now. We will focus especially on the planetary impact of the war and support the creation of texts, visual and sound projects reflecting on the environmental damage resulting from military activities in Ukraine.

Цієї весни ми вступаємо у другий рік повномасштабної війни, яка чинить незворотну шкоду у багатьох вимірах. І ми зі смутком дивимось на становище українського довкілля.

Станом на кінець 2022 року бойові дії охопили понад 12 тисяч квадратних кілометрів заповідної території України. Програма ООН з довкілля зафіксувала понад 2000 випадків серйозної шкоди навколишньому середовищу, забруднення повітря, ґрунтових і поверхневих вод. 450 тисяч гектарів лісу – на окупованій території чи в зоні бойових дій. Під загрозою опинилися близько 600 видів тварин і 750 видів рослин і грибів, деякі з яких занесено до Червоної книги України.

Цього року ESI робить акцент на підтримці мистецьких проєктів, які розповідають про Україну тут і зараз. Разом із Andy Warhol Foundation, ми зосередимося на питанні планетарного відбитку війни, підтримуючи створення текстів, візуальних та аудіо робіт, які працюють з темою шкоди довкіллю, нанесеної воєнними діями в Україні.

At the end of this extremely hard year, we want to send our admiration and love to all the artists and cultural workers who found the courage to continue their work under the conditions of the ongoing war and to express our great appreciation and gratitude to every person and institution that supported their life and work.

Together, we managed to help more than 900 people with 140.000 euro in total in the hope of preserving the space for cultural work and creative practices in Ukraine and helping Ukrainian artists to survive the (so far) worst year of the 21st century.

Emergency Support Initiative will be continued next year, in order to assist those remaining in the country and sustain independent art spaces and art projects.
