Hi there! 
This autumn I celebrate my 7th aniversary in teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language.
To make Ukrainian language more available and affordable for the international students, I've decided to design a few free online courses: Beginner, Upper-Beginner and Pre-Intermediate Ukrainian.
So, now I need 6-10 volunteers who are:
1) eager to learn Ukrainian from the scratch
2) ready to join my free Beginners course online in real time on Saturdays during 4 months
3) do not mind recording the lessons.

Later, the recorded Ukrainian Beginner Course will be available and affordable for the other students via donation.

The start of the free Beginner Course is 5th November (Saturday) 4-5 pm Kyiv time (2-3 pm London time).

Що таке місцевий відмінок? It's a Locative case to describe certain locations:
- у Лондоні - in London
- у (Баттерсі) парку - at (Battersea) Park
- на березі (річки Темзи) - on Thames riverside

Preposition у/в/на + Locative form with ending -і or rarely -у (Лондон - у Лондоні, парк - у парку, берег - на березі)
парк and берег are exceptions, so just keep in mind these locative forms😉

Ukrainian Speaking Club ONLINE

The war in Ukraine has changed the lives and reality of everyone who loves and supports Ukraine.
To support Ukrainian language and culture worldwide, I decided to launch a free Ukrainian Speaking Club ONLINE for two groups:
- group 1 - Beginner & Upper-beginner & Pre-intermediate - 3 pm London time, Saturday
- group 2 - Intermediate & Upper-Intermediate & Advanced - 4 pm London time, Saturday

The first meeting of both Ukrainian Speaking Club groups will be on June 4, 2022 (Saturday).
Each group can host from 4 to 20 students.

If you learn Ukrainian language and would like to improve your conversational skills, you are welcome to join!
To enroll and receive a free place in the Ukrainian Speaking Club, please fill in the application form in my bio.

All the meetings will be organized on Whereby platform (it's similar to Zoom). You will receive the meeting link in a few days after submitted application.
Application deadline is June 3, 2022 (Friday) 23.59 London time.

коли не було світла, мій дєд клепав картопляні каганці

What's imperative mood (наказовий спосіб) in Ukrainian language?

Usually, we use two forms to make imperative mood of verbs:

🌟adding special endings to verbs for you (ти/ви/Ви)

🌟using imperative words хай/нехай (= let it be) + he, she, it, they (він/вона/воно/вони) + present form of verb

🕷️ We add endings when speak about you singular (ти) and you plural/polite (ви/Ви)

For example, word мріяти - to dream -
needs ending й/йте:

(ти) мрій!
(ви/Ви) мрійте!

⚡We choose endings й/йте because this verb has a soft basis: -ія

⚡This rule would work for some verbs with basis endings:
-ія, -іва, -ва, -та

For example:

(-ія) сміятися - to laugh
- смійся! - смійтеся!

(-іва) сподіватися - to hope
- сподівайся! -сподівайтеся!

(-ва) співати - to sing
- співай! - співайте!

(-та) читати - to read
- читай! - читайте!

🐳However, better to check all verbs in a dictionary ☺️

🕷️ In case we make imperative for
he/she/it/they,
we use:
imperative words хай/нехай (= let it be) + he, she, it, they (він/вона/воно/вони) + present form of verb

хай він/вона/вона мріє!
хай вони мріють!

Garlic toasts
(часникові грінки)

Toasts (грінки) are popular snacks all over the world 🌎 One of my favourite toasts are garlic toasts (часникові грінки). Here's the instruction 😉

Ingredients (інгредієнти):

- хліб (bread)
- часник (garlic)
- майонез (mayonnaise)
- яйця (eggs)
- шпроти (sprats)
- петрушка (parsley) or шпинат (spinach)
- помідори (tomatoes) or огірки (cucumbers)

Steps (кроки):

1. Dry bread (підсушити хліб) on a frying pan. No oil! (без олії)
2. Rub dried bread with a garlic (натерти сушений хліб часником)
3. Put mayonnaise (намазати майонезом) on garlic bread
4. Decorate toasts with sprots (шпроти), eggs (яйця), tomatoes/cucumbers (помідори/огірки), parsley/spinach (петрушка/шпинат)

Enjoy the garlic toasts (часникові грінки) ! 🍲

Fear is a resource for your breakthrough

- a fear of uncertainty (страх невизначеності) when i start something new

- a fear of being misunderstood
(страх бути неправильно зрозумілим/зрозумілою) when i meet people

- a fear of making a mistake (страх помилитися) when i make decisions

- a fear of lost opportunities (страх втрачених можливостей) when i review my past decisions

-a fear of surrender (страх капітуляції) when i change my lifestyle

The list can be continued 😌

However, a good news is that fears are the resources for personal improvement🙂

If you have fears, you can review it and take benefits:

- a fear of uncertainty (страх невизначеності) gives you hundreds of thousands scenarios for your future

- a fear of being misunderstood
(страх бути неправильно зрозумілим/зрозумілою) helps you to express your thoughts transparently (чітко висловлювати свої думки) and set your borders (встановлювати кордони) when communicate with other people

- a fear of making a mistake (страх помилитися) gives you a chance to correct your mistake (виправляти помилку) and gain a new experience (отримувати новий досвід)

- a fear of lost opportunities (страх втрачених можливостей) teaches you to take risks (ризикувати)

-a fear of surrender (страх капітуляції) teaches you to accept your weak points (приймати свої слабкості) and get ready to start from the very beginning (починати заново).

All my life I believed i couldn't dance. The reason was my misfortune experience in learning waltz at school. Only aged 29 i understood that my dance fail happened due to my need to dance independently, without a partner 😂☺️
Thanks to reviewing my fear of lost opportunities, now i'm learning a belly dance (вивчаю танець живота).
I practice several times per week and that's one of my resources of inspiration 😊💃

Sunday (неділя) is a great time to have rest and cook something delicious (приготувати щось смачненьке) 😋

One of my favourite desserts is млинці (mlyntsi - pancakes)

Ingredients (інгредієнти):

2 eggs (два яйця)
sugar (цукор) * optional
salt (сіль)
flour (борошно)
water (вода) or milk (молоко)
vanilla extract (екстракт ванілі)
oil (олія) or coconut butter (кокосове масло)

Steps (кроки):
1. збити яйця (scramble eggs)
2. додати цукор, сіль, екстракт ванілі (add sugar, salt, vanilla extract)
3. додати борошно (add flour) to make it thick
4. долити воду або молоко (pour water or milk)
5. смажити на олії чи кокосовому маслі (fry with oil or coconut butter)

Idiom of the day:

сім п'ятниць на тиждень ( literally - seven Fridays per week)
Guess what this means? Not seven Fridays 😂

The meaning:
- to change your mind too often;
- to have doubts regarding something and therefore change your mind up to the situation

In some Ukrainian dialects people also say "сім п'ятниць на неділю". However, I'd recommend you to use a literature version of the idiom "сім п'ятниць на тиждень".

Have you ever tried kapustyanyky? 😉 Капустяники are Ukrainian cabbage pancakes 🥞
It's easy to cook and has both variants - meat free and with meat.

Ingredients (інгредієнти):
- cabbage (капуста)
- onions (цибуля)
- carrot (морква)
- eggs (яйця)
- minced meat (м'ясний фарш)
- salt and pepper (сіль і перець).

Морква and м'ясний фарш are optional, it's up to you :)

Steps (кроки):

1. нарізати капусту і цибулю
(cut a cabbage and onions)
2. почистити і потерти моркву
(peal and grate a carrot)
3. змішати капусту, цибулю і моркву
(mix a cabbage, onions, and a carrot)
4. збити яйця і змішати з овочами
(scramble eggs and mix it with the vegetables)
5. додати сіль, перець і м'ясний фарш
(add salt, pepper, and minced meat)
6. сформувати ложкою оладки і смажити на олії
(shape pancakes using a spoon, fry with oil)

Rule of the day:

To describe the cooking steps, we use Accusative case (Знахідний відмінок) with verbs
-нарізати (cut),
- почистити (peal),
- потерти (grate),
- змішати (mix),
- збити (scramble),
- додати (add),
- сформувати (shape)

Accusative case requires specific ending for feminine inanimate objects:
капуст(а) - капуст(у)
цибул(я) - цибул(ю)
моркв(а) - моркв(у)

If inanimate objects are masculine, neutral, or plural, we use them in initial form of Nominative case (Називний відмінок):
- перець
- м'ясний фарш
- яйця

If you have holidays (відпустка) and plan to cook something tasty (щось смачненьке), I'd recommend you to try meatballs (тефтелі) 🍪

Though it's present in different national cuisines, i will share my recipe here 🤗 It's a simplified version: you boil meatballs instead of frying 😁

Інгредієнти:

🌟minced meat (м'ясний фарш)

📍onion (цибуля)

💡garlic (часник)

🍞bread dipped in water (хліб, розмочений у воді) or 🍚boiled rice (варений рис)

🍙salt (сіль), pepper (перець)
oil (олія) - used to fry цибуля

Mix м'ясний фарш with fried цибуля, add grated часник, хліб, розмочений у воді, and сіль-перець.

👐 make тефтелі, place them into a pan (каструля), and boil it with water for 30 min :)

🍽️ enjoy your meal!

P. S. I prefer eat тефтелі with fried potatoes (смажена картопля) and tomatoes (помідори).

One of my favorite summer meals is so-called "3 minute meat" (трихвилинне м'ясо). Traditionally (традиційно) it should be cooked of homemade pork (домашня свинина). However, any kind of meat suits this recipe.
The main secret is to slice meat into very thing long slices (дуже тонкі довгі шматки). Later, fry it maximum 3 min (максимум 3 хвилини) on each side using only extra hot frying pan. Salt and pepper added while frying.
Simple salad of tomatoes (помідори), parsley (петрушка), and leeks (зелена цибуля) and any side dish (гарнір). Here you see трихвилинне м'ясо, tomato salad (салат із помідорів ), and rice (рис). Ukrainian people often cook porridges (каші).

Spending time on the river (відпочинок на річці), swimming (плавання), eating fish (риба), vegetable salad (овочевий салат), and fish soup (рибна юшка / уха), drinking compote (компот), and sunbathing (засмагання) might be symbols for Ukrainian outdoor activities during warm seasons :)

Have you ever been to Ukrainian volcanogenic lakes (вулканічні озера)? Ukraine has a lot of them! :)

In September 2019, I was lucky to visit a volcanogenic lake Buchak (вулканічне озеро Бучак) located in Cherkasy region (Черкаська область). Believe me, it was an awesome experience! :)

Locals assure that lake Buchak is a so-called place of power (так зване місце сили). It's believed that a person who has swam in Buchak gets the charisma (харизма) and an extraordinary strength (неймовірна сила) to overcome any issues (подолати будь-які труднощі)!

At the first sight, swimming in Buchak seems challenging: the lake has 40 meters depth and quite a low temperature below 10 Celsius.
Anyway, I swam :)

It was a wonderful feeling of the cold water that immediately became warm after embraced my body. Swimming in lake Buchak demonstrated me how my fears often exaggerate the problems.
Good that experience clarifies everything! :)
