Ebola virus disease 13/06/2019

Ebola virus disease
11 June 2019 - The Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) have confirmed a case of Ebola Virus Disease in Uganda. Although there have been numerous previous alerts, this is the first confirmed case in Uganda during the Ebola outbreak on-going in neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Key facts
• Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a rare but severe, often fatal illness in humans.
• The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.
• The average EVD case fatality rate is around 50%. Case fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks.
• Community engagement is key to successfully controlling outbreaks.
• Good outbreak control relies on applying a package of interventions, namely case management, infection prevention and control practices, surveillance and contact tracing, a good laboratory service, safe and dignified burials and social mobilisation.
• Vaccines to protect against Ebola are under development and have been used to help control the spread of Ebola outbreaks in Guinea and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
• Early supportive care with rehydration, symptomatic treatment improves survival. There is no licensed treatment proven to neutralize the virus but a range of blood, immunological and drug therapies are under development.

ONSITE CARE CLINICS
We take care of your employees so they can take care of your business.
In recent years, employers have turned to high deductible health care plans to control the rising cost of healthcare benefits. Unfortunately, this cost shift hasn’t worked well for everyone. Employees are unhappier with their benefits. They are unhealthier because it costs more to see a doctor and they delay seeking treatment. For the employer, downstream insurance claims rise. There is a better way: http://www.rhsu.info/index.php/onsiteclinics

How much physical activity do you need?
The evidence is clear—physical activity fosters normal growth and development, can reduce the risk of various chronic diseases, and can make people feel better, function better, and sleep better. Some health benefits start immediately after activity, and even short bouts of physical activity are beneficial. 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity is the minimum recommendation for adults, according to the CDC. In Utah, 55% of adults (age 18+) achieve this, compared to 53% nationally. (Source: https://bit.ly/2ravllq)

Sleeping is important, and adults 18-60 years should be getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night. But what if you don’t sleep well? Try being consistent with when you go to sleep and wake up. Get your bedroom at a comfortable temperature and darkness. Keep electronics out of the bedroom. Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime. Being physically active during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night. (Source: https://bit.ly/2nJk3qX and https://bit.ly/2n6SggQ)

In other countries it is compulsory by law that all companies should be organized and have their human resource trained in first aid, in order to allow effective intervention in this area, its failure is liable to fine, however Reference Health Services Uganda regards First Aid Training as a civic right and a moral responsibility.
It is important to mention that provision of first aid does not exclude importance of medical personnel like doctor and a nurse. Rapid action at the sense of accident can save life of a person and prevent the condition from worsening.
It should be any company priority to organize first aid training, whether it is a number of human resource, materials like first aid kits/boxes, maintaining the team well trained and adjusting them to a company’s own risks and in accordance with the law.
