There is a simplistic brand of moralism among us [esp in our churches] that wants to reduce the ethical life to making a list, checking it twice--against the index in some best-selling book of virtues, perhaps--and then trying very hard to be not naughty

Perspective is what you have when it's someone else's problem. As people face those problems sincere presence is needed much more than advice or perspective. Offering who you are not just what you know or what you would do in their situation conveys your fierce love and friendship to the deep places of their heart.
The present moment is not an occasion to keep on doing the same things Christians have been doing in the recent past--except now "really meaning it." It is time to change our focus, individually and in our Christian groupings.--Dallas Willard
Great thought from Dallas Willard
Circumstances and other people are not in control ofour character or of the life that lies endlessly before us in the kingdom of God.
God's plan is for us to develop, as apprentices to Jesus, to the point where we can take our place in the ongoing creativity of the universe-Willard
We live in a culture that wants to reduce everything to technique. --Parker J. Palmer
Don't be too easily convinced that God really wants you to do all sorts of work you needn't do. Each must do his duty "in that state of life to which God has called him." Remember that a belief in the virtues of doing for doing's sake is characteristically American and characteristically modern: so that two veils may divide you from a correct view! There can be intemperance in work just as in drink. What feels like zeal may be only fidgets or even flattering of one's self importance...By doing what "one's station and its duties" do not demand, one can make oneself less fit for the duties it does demand and so commit some injustice. Just you give Mary a little chance as well as Martha.--C.S. Lewis
The above quote is a good reminder to me to walk with God rather than be forced into needless responsibilities the world or others place on me. I especially identify with the "flattering of one's self importance" part. I deeply desire God's rhythm of life as my own. May we all be lead there.
UNCURATED: Candid Convesations--"How Would God Introduce Himself?" with Garry Brantley from CrossBridge Church
Are grace, love, and a light burden indicative of our faith? If not, maybe we aren’t aligned with the one who we say we follow.
"It is not so much that hypocrites join religious groups, but that the very structures of much religion encourage people to act and pretend. This all-or-nothing thinking is a cancer at the very heart of our message"--Rohr
Our words are powerful. I need this reminder. -Chris
“A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.” Proverbs 15:1, 2 NKJV
We don’t need “more masculinity. We need a deeper and healed masculinity that serves first, loves more holy and wholly, and seeks not its “rights” but its rightful place at the feet of others with a wash basin and a towel
On Ministry and Life: God doesn't need me to worry about impact. God wants to teach me to be present to people. The natural result of that has eternal impact.
Thursday with Garry Brantley
Garry Brantley and I attempt to sort through our own hearts to discuss race, pain, healing, our faith, our church, our city, and our own personal failings. Join us for this discussion as two unqualified men discuss race. Kind-hearted comments and criticism is welcome.
The process of becoming a son, becoming a man, and becoming a "King", someone who can be entrusted by God with influence. Discussed with our friend, Morgan Snyder, Author of ground-breaking book "Becoming a King"
John Eldredge and Ransomed Heart Ministries
"So long as a man is taking the most fundamental need he has as a man and bringing it to his world he will be absolutely dependent on circumstances and outcomes for his peace."-- Morgan Snyder
"Superhero Jesus has done so much damage to the christian walk. Because we've drawn the conclusion that we should master every obstacle with aplomb. That we too should be unshakeable too. (A kind of) Super hero juniors....making us terrible empty posers." John Eldredge
This is NOT the Gospel. But it often gets explained this way.
"Jesus got it RIGHT! Now you try real hard to get it RIGHT. You won't get it right. BUT Jesus made up for that so that his Wrath-Filled (super-ticked-off) Father won't send you to eternal torment.....AS LONG as you did the right thing(s), the right way, and said the right words at the right time to get IN on this deal called salvation."
This is rooted, slanted, and communicated from such a place of fear. That doesn't sound like redemption to me. It doesn't sound like very good news." What do y'all think? How has the Gospel been explained to you? What false beliefs about God and the Gospel do you still carry?
Historian, Teacher, encourager, and friend, Kelly Hager Jacobs shares her insight on finding hope in situaitons where not everyone thinks the same. Different backgrounds and belief structures still have room for love, compassion, and understanding to win out over fear.
