Our team has enjoyed diving into this book!
David Brooks explores the essential skill of truly seeing others and making them feel valued and understood—a skill crucial for healthy relationships and a thriving society.
Alexandria values this belief in our community and we are fully aware that we can’t make the difference we seek to make if we can’t truly understand others and foster deeper connections with our peers.
We'd love to hear from you! If you've read this book, what have you learned from it? How has it impacted your interactions and relationships?

Summer is the perfect time for bringing people together, and we're still buzzing from the incredible turnout at our Founding Board Members event earlier this season! On May 30th, we gathered to celebrate our journey and honor the visionaries who started it all.
We’re incredibly grateful for their leadership and dedication to building a stronger Alexandria community.
Join us as we celebrate and take another look at all the smiles and laughs we shared that day!
What would your life be like if fear was not a factor? How have your ancestors shaped your story?
These are just a few questions that came up as the ACT team discussed “How to Know a Person - The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen” by David Brooks
Brooks shared that the ability to connect is not something you’re either good at or not, but a set of skills you can develop and grow into. He challenged us to be illuminators - asking good questions, being curious, and seeking to appreciate others in the fullness of their humanity. As we seek to live into our mission, will you join us in being illuminators?

ACT’s Youth Council gives Alexandria’s young people the decision-making power and resources to address key issues. In 2023, the Youth Council compared two racially and economically segregated zip codes in Alexandria and examined youth’s access to resources in each.
Through their research, the members of the Youth Council were able to uncover disparities, then bring them to light in a presentation to the City Council and school board members.
