Welcome back to Feature Fridays! Today we spotlight Mr. Michael “Mike” Jackson who is the District Manager of Public Realm & Special Projects at the Energy Corridor District in Houston, TX. Mr. Jackson completed a 20+ year federal civilian career in 2022, last serving as the Construction Technology Subject Matter Expert (SME) at the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC), Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, TX. He managed the Air Force Design Awards Program, the Air Force Standard Design Program, and served on two Tri-Service Discipline Working Groups (DWG).
He began his federal civilian service in March 1999 with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Valley District, New Orleans, LA. From June 2001 to July 2004, he worked as a Mechanical Design Engineer at a nuclear plant in Clinton, IL. He then returned to federal service as a Project Engineer for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System (SLVHCS), New Orleans, LA. Welcome to Feature Fridays!
Today we would like to highlight Dasia Jackson who is entering her senior year at Lawrence Tech! Jackson is already an engineer of tomorrow with multiple honors and awards.
Most recently, Jackson was honored at The Engineering Society of Detroit’s Gold Award banquet with the College Initiative Student of the Year award from the National Society of Black Engineers Detroit Professional Chapter. The honor recognized her efforts in re-establishing the Lawrence Tech NSBE student chapter. She was also awarded at LTU for Outstanding Student Member of the National Society of Black Engineers.
Jackson, an electrical engineering major, chose LTU after she graduated from the Advanced Technology Academy in Dearborn, where she was part of its mechatronics program for three years at Henry College.
Jackson said she chose LTU because of the “sense of community and the small class sizes. I visited other places, and a lot of the students said they didn’t have a connection with their professors or their advisors. What I like about Lawrence Tech is that I have a real connection with my professors and with my classmates, and a lot of the higher-level students really helped me get through the major.”Her advice to high school students seeking a college? “I would tell them to drive for what they believe in, and that Lawrence Tech is a great school to navigate yourself through that process,” she said. “Lawrence Tech gives you a chance to make a difference and guarantee opportunity for yourself.”
Jackson is also an active member of the National Society of Black Engineers & LTU’s Society of Physics Students and has done 100 hours of volunteer work for Forgotten Harvest, Gleaners, and the Greening of Detroit, emphasizing the latter group for helping efforts to mitigate climate change. She also helped organize a jean giveaway that saw more than 130 pairs of jeans donated to people experiencing homelessness.
