Join us on Tuesday, September 17th and September 24th from 6-9pm ET for our September EATE Webinar Series - The Reality of Su***de: What Interpreters Need to Know.

Su***de is a topic that we aren't comfortable talking about until we have to. It is a reality that does not discriminate; it doesn't care who you are or what you do, it can affect anyone. Presented by an interpreter sibling su***de loss survivor, and a certified Deaf interpreter, this workshop series will be an open honest conversation about what interpreters need to know about su***de, and how to safely and effectively apply it to our work as interpreters.

A portion of the proceeds from these live webinars will go to the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention (AFSP).

Each session is worth 0.3 PS CEUs, or you can complete the series and earn 0.6 PS CEUS.

Register for the series here: https://education.rid.org/products/the-reality-of-su***de-what-interpreters-need-to-know-2

Accessibility: To submit a reasonable accommodation request, please email [email protected]. Accommodation requests for part one must be submitted no later than Friday, September 6th, and part two must be submitted by Friday, September 13th.

Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) mourns the loss of Kelly Flores, a true national treasure. Kelly's remarkable career spanned over two decades, during which she profoundly influenced the interpreting profession.

Starting at Oakland Community College (OCC) in 2004, she became a full-time faculty member in 2007 and the program coordinator in 2008. Her leadership saw OCC's sign language interpreting program earn accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (CCIE). Kelly's commitment to accessibility led her to develop a DeafBlind course, ensuring training for Support Service Providers (SSPs).

Kelly's passion for education and advocacy for the Deaf and DeafBlind communities was evident in all she did. She co-authored "Principles of Interpreting" with Brenda E. Cartwright, a vital text that captures the history and evolution of interpreting, and provides essential insights into the field.

With an MS in Postsecondary Education and Adult Education from Capella University, Kelly's teaching career began at Lansing Community College and continued at OCC, where she focused on sociocultural-based curricula promoting critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and intercultural competence. She also served on the boards of Michigan Registry of Interpreters (MRID) and RID, leaving an indelible mark on both organizations.

Kelly's legacy as a passionate educator, advocate, and friend to the Deaf and DeafBlind communities will continue to inspire and shape the interpreting profession for years to come. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
