Caron 2024 Virtual Family Speaker Series!
Monday, July 22nd 7:30 PM - Monday, October 7th 8:30 PM

Just as addiction is a family disease, recovery is a family process. As recovery principles and the 12-steps have guided millions of people to begin and continue their journey of recovery from substance use disorder, countless family members have also found serenity, strength, and a new way of life through working their own recovery programs.

The Family Speaker Series aims to open a dialogue and provide learning on various family recovery topics and provides a valuable opportunity for families to connect, learn, and grow together. Spanning 12 weeks, each session will focus on a core principle of recovery featuring a family member's own experiences. Participants will also have the opportunity to share and ask questions.

Every trial we face is an opportunity to grow.

05/18/2024

If we were taught to ignore red flags (what red flags?) as a child, then it makes sense that weā€™d do the same as adults.

If our younger self had to walk on eggshells to keep-the-people-pleased, it makes sense that itā€™s habit to do so now.

If we werenā€™t allowed to speak up for our needs when we were young, it makes sense that weā€™d struggle to identify our needs today.

Did you hear me?

It. makes. sense. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

You arenā€™t broken (and this is NOT hopeless).

As children, we were often given ā€œthe boundariesā€ for relationships by people and groups who didnā€™t know what healthy boundaries were.

So it stands to reason that the ā€œboundariesā€ they gave us for how to have relationships were a bit, er, warped.

Some hurt us on purpose.

Some meant well. (They were just repeating what had done to them, not knowing there could be any other way).

Either way, things do NOT have to stay this way for us.

We didnā€™t have power to change anything then, but we DO have power now.

Itā€™s time to discover a different way.

Students who have been identified as having a learning disorder, ADHD, or anxiety may not be completely ready to handle the demands of college. Even though many colleges offer learning support resources, some students may lack the self-advocacy or executive functioning skills to effectively avail themselves of these services.

Through our College Success Programā„ , we position these students for success with strong self-advocacy and problem-solving skills. Workshops begin this August.

Dr. John Gottman recommends rituals of connection to begin and end each day. Building shared meaning with your partner is essential for understanding each other deeply as a couple. By creating and practicing rituals together, you express your identity as a team. Whether it's as routine as sharing a Sunday morning breakfast or as special as your annual getaway to your favorite vacation spot, these shared traditions define your relationship and are something you develop together.

What are your cherished rituals that bring you and your partner closer together? Share your special rituals for a thriving connection with us in the comments!

Weā€™re all reading wrong, Alexandra Moe writes. ā€œWe should be doing it out loud, all the time, with everyone we know.ā€ā  https://theatln.tc/ylUOdBIc
ā
ā€œReading, while not technically medicine, is a fundamentally wholesome activity. It can prevent cognitive decline, improve sleep, and lower blood pressure,ā€ Moe writes. ā€œPeople have intuitively understood readingā€™s benefits for thousands of years ā€¦ But the ancients read differently than we do today. Until approximately the tenth century ā€¦ reading was synonymous with reading aloud. Silent reading was terribly strange, and, frankly, missed the point of sharing words to entertain, educate, and bond.ā€ā
ā
Although those early readers didnā€™t know it, verbal reading can boost someoneā€™s mood and their ability to recall. ā€œIt can lower parentsā€™ stress and increase their warmth and sensitivity toward their children,ā€ Moe continues. Reading out loud ā€œinvolves several operationsā€”motor control, hearing, and self-reference (the fact that you said it)ā€”all of which activate the hippocampus, a brain region associated with episodic memory ā€¦ So although you might enjoy an audiobook narrated by Meryl Streep, you would remember it better if you read parts of it out loud.ā€ā
ā
And you donā€™t need an audience to read out loud. ā€œPlenty of solitary vocal reading no doubt consists of deciphering recipes and proofreading work emails, but if you want to reap the full perks, the best selections are poetry and literature,ā€ Moe continues. ā€œThese genres provide access to facets of human experience that can be otherwise unreachable, which helps us process our own emotions and memories.ā€ ā
ā
ā€œHearing words read aloud to you also has unique advantages, especially for kids. Storytelling has been shown to increase hospitalized childrenā€™s levels of oxytocin while decreasing cortisol and pain,ā€ Moe continues. And ā€œanecdotal evidence suggests that adults, too, can benefit from such listening ā€¦ The health benefits of reading aloud are so profound that some doctors in England now refer their chronic-pain patients to read-aloud groups.ā€ā
