Today is International Day of Veterinary Medicine. Our veterinarian in Walnut Hill would have attended mostly to large livestock and spent his time making “house calls” to farming clients. He would have left the clinic open, allowing farmers to leave a note or wait. (A cage separated the pharmacy from the waiting room.) Veterinary licenses were not required until the start of the 20th century, but early veterinarians were pioneers in disease theory and surgery.

Hello, my name is Leah Bean. I will be a junior at Sioux Central in Sioux Rapids, Iowa this fall. I am the 17 year old daughter of Craig and Chris Bean, and the second out of five children. We live on a farm near Marathon, Iowa. When I am not busy with my steer, I keep busy with my 4-H club, Fairfield Pioneers, my FFA chapter-Sioux Central, National Honor Society, and in Buena Vista county- 4-H Livestock Judging Team, Equine Team, and 4-H County Youth Council. I enjoy showing multiple species: horse, dog, poultry, meat goats, and CATTLE-- are my favorite!
Chunky Monkey has always been laid back. His personality really started to show when he decide to chew through 2 extension cords, multiple lead ropes, twine strings, sticks, occasionally my shirt, and shoes. He will do anything possible to slobber all over me. Over this past year, he has become my best friend. Chunky Monkey follows me like a dog and has figured out how to walk himself to the wash rack. Chunky Monkey has shown me that anything is possible with the help of my community, friends, and family.
Dr. Dan Grooms and I will be showing my steer on behalf of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association and Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. The most exciting part is seeing the impact of my community coming together and raising awareness & money for the Ronald McDonald House. This is a real honor to be a part of the 2023 Governor's Charity Steer Show. I am so thankful to everyone who has supported Chunky Monkey and I. We will see you at the Iowa State Fair!
