As many of you know, we recently added a wonderful Doctor to our team here at PHSC, and we are so excited to have her! Please help us welcome Dr. Hubbard!

Dr. Kelsey Hubbard was born in Fort Worth and grew up in Aledo. She went to Oklahoma State University for her undergraduate studies and majored in Agricultural Economics with a Pre-Veterinary Business minor. During her studies she was very involved in on-campus activities while also working full time at a veterinary hospital. She then went to St. Georges University in Grenada for the first 3 years of her veterinary schooling. Dr. Hubbard completed her clinical year at Auburn University and graduated in 2018. She worked as a small animal veterinarian for the past 6 years before moving to Pet Hospital at South Collins. She has experience in soft tissue surgery, allergy testing and immunotherapy formulation, some orthopedic procedures, as well as diagnostics and internal medicine. Dr. Hubbard will be completing her Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner program through the Canine Rehab Institute in December 2024. Dr. Hubbard also has a special interest in integrative medicine and preventative care.

In her free time, Dr. Hubbard enjoys traveling, reading, DIY projects, and spending time with her family since getting married in 2023. Dr. Hubbard has one dog that she adopted while she was in Grenada, Finn, as well as two cats, Javi and Squeak. Dr. Hubbard is looking forward to meeting your pets and helping them to live long and happy lives!

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria. These bacteria can be found worldwide in soil and water. There are many strains of Leptospira bacteria that can cause disease, and many mammals are susceptible—including dogs, people, livestock, and certain wildlife. Although cats also may become ill, this happens only rarely.

Leptospirosis is more common in warm climates with high annual rainfall, but it can occur anywhere, especially after heavy rainfall and flooding. For dogs, the midwestern, eastern, and southwestern regions of the United States are considered hotspots of infection.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)
