Susan, a retiree who had spent years as a heavy equipment operator, found herself facing a sudden challenge when she began experiencing difficulty breathing. Rushed to a local hospital, she was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure, a daunting diagnosis for anyone. As her condition deteriorated, she was placed on a ventilator for support. Despite the uncertainty of her situation, Susan remained determined to regain her health. After spending several weeks in the local hospital, Susan required extended and specialized medical care to address her respiratory needs. It was decided by her medical team that she would be transferred to Kindred Hospital Tarrant County Arlington for advanced treatment, including ventilator weaning and rehabilitation.
Upon arrival at Kindred Hospital, Susan was met with a comprehensive care plan tailored to her specific needs. Central to this plan was the primary goal of liberating her from the ventilator, a crucial step towards her overall recovery. Susan approached her treatment with determination, actively participating in the therapies prescribed by the interdisciplinary team.
The expertise of the pulmonologist and respiratory team played a pivotal role in Susan's journey towards recovery. Through their guidance, Susan learned and diligently practiced various breathing techniques designed to strengthen her respiratory muscles and improve her lung function. Susan's resilience and dedication proved to be successful with each passing day. Susan made remarkable progress gaining both strength and endurance and successfully liberated herself from the ventilator.
In addition to her commitment to respiratory therapy, Susan devoted over 100 hours to tailored physical therapy sessions aimed at enhancing her mobility and strength. Guided by her physical and occupational therapist, she followed a regimen of exercises focused on improving endurance and restoring independence. With each session, Susan made significant progress in her recovery. Passing all goals that were set in her care plan, she was able to discharge home. From the entire team at Kindred, we wish her all the success in recovery.

Nathan, a retiree who cherished spending weekends cooking barbecue, faced a health crisis when he began struggling to breathe. Initially attributing it to grill fumes, Nathan persisted until worsening symptoms forced him to seek medical assistance. Admitting himself to Fort Worth's local hospital, he was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure due to influenza A, complicated by sepsis, septic shock, and pre-existing renal issues. Despite being placed on a ventilator, Nathan's condition didn't improve, leading to a decision to transfer him to Kindred Hospital Tarrant County – Arlington for specialized care.
Upon transfer to Kindred, the interdisciplinary team crafted a care plan, tailored to his unique medical needs. The primary focus was on liberating him from the ventilator, a crucial step towards his overall well-being. With unwavering determination, Nathan actively engaged in his treatment, collaborating closely with his pulmonologist and respiratory team to employ specialized breathing techniques aimed at strengthening his lung function. Gradually, Nathan achieved the milestone of weaning off the ventilator, reclaiming the ability to breathe independently.
Motivated by his own progress, Nathan embraced the comprehensive rehabilitation program. With the guidance of his physical, occupational, and speech therapists, Nathan embarked on the path to relearning basic tasks of mobility and bodily functions. From simple movements like transitioning from bed to chair to more complex activities such as walking with limited assistance, Nathan demonstrated remarkable perseverance and resilience. Each day marked a milestone as he regained independence in performing activities of daily living, once again relishing the simple joys of everyday life.
With determination and dedication, Nathan surpassed every goal outlined in his care plan, marking significant strides in his recovery. Having regained his strength and functionality, he was deemed suitable for discharge and transferred to a lower-level care facility.

After being involved in a motor vehicle accident, Juan T., 73, was placed on a ventilator and a trach and experienced complications during his hospital stay. When he came to Kindred Hospital Arlington, he was still reliant on both, but he was alert and able to communicate by mouthing words and gesturing. The staff described Juan as very motivated to recover and always positive. They credit this attitude with the progress he was able to make. With the help of the entire medical, respiratory and rehabilitation interdisciplinary teams, Juan was weaned from the ventilator, had the trach capped, and regained his muscle strength and mobility. Juan was very grateful to the entire team for the help they gave him. He was discharged to a rehab unit and is looking forward to getting back home to his wife, his kids, and his grandkids.
