Melody Morrison had two total knee replacements this year. She was referred to Baylor Scott & White Institute of Rehabilitation – Outpatient Therapy (BSW-OP) Argyle center by two colleagues who also had total knee replacements. She shared these thoughts with us about her experience:

“I had 2 total knee replacements (TKR): one in February and one in May of 2024. I needed physical therapy for recovery. I was referred to BSW-OP by two others who also had total knee replacements. BSW-OP was highly recommended by them.

The center is conveniently located. The atmosphere is calm and relatively quiet. It has ample room and equipment; however, you don't feel like you are in a fitness gym which is appealing to me. The therapists are extremely knowledgeable, cordial, professional and compassionate in the care of their clients.

[Physical therapist] Viral "Vic" Patel is a rare find from what I've determined from people who have gone to other outpatient therapy centers near me. He has firmly yet compassionately helped me to achieve excellent ROM [range of motion] and strengthening in my recovery. He is very sincere in his approach and gives you 100% of his attention. He provides an explanation of not only how to do the exercises but also the reasons for same. I was also having some IT Band issues and he tailored my treatment to fit that need as well as conquer the issues. I believe he has truly helped me in my recovery.

Even prior to warming up for the session, Vic Patel asks how I'm doing, what my pain level is and how he can help me that session. He will immediately assess me and then gear the session to my needs along with achieving the final goal of my recovery. As I'm performing the exercises, he monitors me and verbally asks how I'm handling same. I have learned so much from his guidance and expertise. At the end of each session, he ices my knee. He has also used the TENS unit when I've had the IT Band issues and/or muscle spasms.

[My] goals have been achieved. I can now traverse stairs, take long walks, can stand for a couple of hours, and have great ROM.

My legs are actually working together for the first time in years. I can now do more physically due to the excellent guidance of my therapist. Through the compassion, attention and professional expertise of Vic Patel, I have had an excellent outcome from my therapy! The two other therapists are also great. I highly recommend BSW Outpatient Therapy in Argyle, TX.”

Cheers to Melody! These kind sentiments were courtesy of Melody Morrison regarding the treatment she received at our center in Argyle. Get back to what you love by calling us at 888.722.9567 or go to https://bit.ly/3L4u8Yl.

Victor Cardoso was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and required both bilateral knee and bilateral hip replacement surgeries, which left him bedridden and unable to bear weight on his ankles for six months prior to the procedures.

After completing both surgeries, he needed physical therapy to regain his ability to walk. Upon researching physical therapy facilities, Victor chose Baylor Scott & White (BSW) Institute for Rehabilitation - Outpatient Therapy in Richardson, Texas.

“BSW Rehab outpatient physical therapy center in Richardson, TX has “top of the line” equipment. In addition, all therapists are extremely friendly to everyone and ensuring everyone’s comfort. Every therapist is motivating their patients and are extremely helpful. The music in the center is a major motivation as well.

[Physical therapist] Ketki is tremendously phenomenal! Ketki is always motivating me and ensures that progress is being made during every session. Ketki explains what the goal for each session will be and makes all exercises fun. Therapist student Alicia was outstanding in implementing what she was learning and was a great motivator as well. Ketki is undoubtable the best therapist to help me walk again. Without Ketki, I definitely would not be where I am on my journey to recovery.

My therapy sessions consist of loosening the ankles and stretching of the ankles followed by a series of exercises to work on mobility and strengthening on the ankles and the knees/hips. All sessions are enjoyable as the exercises are being done on the best equipment while listening to the music the center plays. My experience with BSW outpatient therapy is excellent and exceeded all my expectations.

BSW rehab has definitely been there for me in getting me back to recovery and living a normal quality of life. All therapists assist each other when help is needed and are extremely friendly with every patient. BSW has the best therapists and I honestly look forward towards my therapy sessions every time. A million thank you BSW for Ketki, Therapist student Alicia and the other therapists at the center!

My goal going into therapy was to be able to walk and get out of a wheelchair. The top goal I have achieved through therapy is being able to put weight on my ankles and start walking using a cane instead of a wheelchair or a walker. In addition, I have now been able to climb a small series of stairs/steps, which I was unable to do prior to therapy.”

“At the age of 62, I received a reverse total left shoulder replacement. While the surgery was ‘outpatient,’ the recovery was expected to take many months!

The first post-op step in my recovery was to keep my arm immobile and in a sling, 24x7, for six weeks. The second step was to dedicate myself to a physical therapy rehabilitation program.

While there are several options for physical therapy (PT), I selected Baylor Scott & White Institute [Outpatient Therapy] in Little Elm. My selection was based on a few factors important to me. First, the location is close to my home, second the staff and physical therapists are professional and highly trained in all aspects of physical therapy as well as having specialists focused on shoulder rehab.

I fell in love with the game of golf decades ago and I was determined to get back on the course. Much to my surprise, this Baylor Scott & White Institute location has a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Therapist…music to my ears!

Once my sling was removed, I began rehab in early February. My therapy consisted of one office visit per week plus incorporating a set of exercises to do at home between visits. I found my physical therapist to be highly trained, in-tune with my progress, and a good communicator.

In my case, I had two PTs. The first was a skilled therapist in shoulders (as well as much more), my second therapist, also trained in shoulder rehab, was certified by Titleist Golf and could design a program for me with an eye toward my interest in golf. My last couple in office sessions actually included me hitting golf balls into a net while being videoed. This allowed my physical therapist to design exercises targeting areas for improvement.

In total, my therapy covered 10 weeks consisting of a progressive program that was in step with my improvements.

Since my final PT session (graduation) and in coordination with my surgeon, I began swinging the golf club and progressing to the point of playing golf on a regular basis after 10 weeks of rehab. To that end, I just returned from a golf trip where we played 6 rounds of golf in 5 days. The shoulder performed very well!

My new shoulder is strong, flexible and pain-free. I credit the trained PTs at Baylor Scott & White Institute team in Little Elm as a key to my recovery and getting back to a normal life. I am thrilled with my end result."

Lori Schwichtenberg is a fighter. Her original cancer diagnosis of breast cancer ended up becoming something more. It became metastatic and moved to her bone. She needed a rod surgically placed in her left femur.

After some in-home therapy, her physicians referred Lori to physical therapy for care. ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation Physical Therapist Scott Kramer completed her initial evaluation and created a custom program to get Lori moving without crutches.

"I am still active in treatments," she said. "Scott is so great at tailoring our frequency of visits to what works for me."

While working on strengthening and mobility, Scott used different exercises to challenge Lori each session and boost her confidence. She also worked hard on her at-home exercise program to return to hiking, camping and walking her dogs without assistance.

"He pushed me to feel confident in walking unassisted and really helped me to get where I am now," she said. "Just this week, I was able to walk my two Aussie dogs solo."

Lori, you continue to inspire us with your strength and perseverance. We are so pleased to hear you left those crutches behind and are beginning to meet your physical therapy goals. Keep fighting, and thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

Research Chemist Brian Calderwood had extensive radiation treatment for melanoma tumors on the left side of his chest wall. While necessary to treat his cancer, the unfortunate side effect was a burn that turned into a wound, which limited the use of his left arm. Brian could not do his woodworking, golf or play with his grandchildren like he used to. Thus, Brian sought to get back to doing what he loves.

Having experienced cancer herself, Physical Therapist Amy Saye conducted Brian's assessment and devised a ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation treatment program with both clinical expertise and empathy for Brian's experience. Amy began working with him to help him to reduce pain and regain shoulder mobility and strength. Brian has been working diligently, both in-center and at home, to reach his physical therapy goals.

"Amy has been fantastic to work with and does a good job of explaining why she has me do various stretches," he said. "The fact the she has been open about her experiences with cancer made me more comfortable."

Brian knew he was on the right track with his small victories. He could reach above his head to get something off the top shelf in the kitchen. He managed tasks at work without asking co-workers for assistance. His oncologist was so impressed with his progress that Brian was released to swing a golf club again.

"I feel great right now," he said. "I feel like I have been given an enormous gift - my shoulder back!"

We are pleased to hear that you are back to doing many things you enjoyed before radiation, Brian. Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

If you met Susan Frey, you would know that horses are her reason for getting up each day. She has ridden for many years, spent time teaching others, and shared the joy of horses with her daughter. By caring for large animals, Susan’s dedication, love, and joy became the real reward.

Susan was referred to Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation - Outpatient Therapy after her third total knee replacement in 2021.

It was at the Plano 15th Street center where she began working with physical therapist Karrie Johnson on her recovery from an unsuccessful surgery over eight years ago. Despite multiple procedures aimed at correcting the issue, each attempt resulted in another surgery for various reasons. Her fourth total knee replacement, this time with rods, took place at the end of 2023.

Throughout her journey, Karrie has worked with Susan to improve her strength, maintaining an upbeat and positive attitude even during the most difficult and discouraging times.

“Karrie always greets me with a smile and celebrates the tiniest of victories,” said Susan. “She cheers me on even when I barely lift my leg off the table. She knows I have been through the ringer but doesn’t stop trying for me. So I keep trying too ... I keep coming in because I know she is fighting for me.”

Susan's love for horses is so profound that her ultimate goal is to return to the barn and the horses she adores and continue training others to ride. In the meantime, she is planning to travel to Canada, attend a Taylor Swift concert and visit Niagara Falls.
