It was a pleasure to have Linus Chanda CEO of REA - Rural Electrification Authority, Zambia, Doreen Bwalya, Miles Kuschel from Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative and Nick Allen on stage with us to talk about why the electric cooperative model is the solution to bring electricity to rural communities in Africa.
The scenes from the early days of the American electric cooperative movement are being replayed in sub-Saharan Africa. Like U.S. farmers in the 1930s and 40s, people in Liberia, Uganda and Zambia are proving, once again, that the co-op model can bring light to remote rural communities.
During , African co-op leaders are sharing more about the challenges they face, how American co-ops can help and the opportunities for America's electric co-ops to help overcome them during the NRECA International lunch.

Building community!
A well-deserved day of rest and relaxation turned into a soccer tournament. Rather than visiting the Mayan ruins, the team spent the morning playing soccer with the EMRE crew and local electricians. Played at a covered facility with an artificial turf surface, complete with an announcer, the United We Light team did well against talented players from their host utility. They worked up just as much of a sweat as if they had been working in the village, perhaps more. It's back to work today!
