The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) is the consortium of the nonprofit academic libraries within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Since the beginning of the OEN Workshops and Reviews program, there have been 183 workshops at 19 institutions and over 1,000 participants.

The goal of the VIVA Course Mapping Project is to support the discovery of Open Educational Resources (OER) aligned to Virginia courses. Recognizing that competing demands and time constraints present barriers to OER adoption for many instructors, the Course Mapping Project works to consolidate and align OER for high enrollment courses at Virginia higher education institutions. The Virginia General Assembly has provided funds to support an Open and Affordable Course Content Grant Program through VIVA, Virginia’s Academic Library Consortium, a program of the State Council of Higher Education. This grant program, VIVA Open Grants, focuses on reducing the costs of higher education for Virginia students by eliminating textbook costs, a significant barrier to student success. CORRECTION: VIVA is pleased to announce 25 VIVA Open Adopt Grants awards were awarded to individuals at 15 institutions. The VIVA Open Adopt Grant program provides support for the time it takes to integrate existing open or no-cost materials into a syllabus and to ensure that the results of those efforts are available to Virginia educators. On March 23, 2023,VIVA will hold its second Community Forum, a virtual event meant to bring VIVA members together to consider ideas relevant to the future of the consortium. This year’s theme, “Accessibility, Usability and Inclusion” will examine ways that VIVA members are working to address issues that face Virginia libraries and identify actions that can bring about positive change. Registration is open for the VIVA Open Skills Academy: Building Your OER Practice. The VIVA Open Skills Academy, facilitated by Megan Simmons, ISKME, is a project-based, three-part webinar series that builds on the foundational skills and practices of collaborating to curate, evaluate, create, and share Open Educational Resources (OER) to further develop projects to advance OER.
Participants are expected to attend all three sessions and complete approximately five hours of practice activities to find, curate, publish, and share their OER project. Those who complete their projects will receive a Certificate of Completion. The Academy is open to Virginia higher education professionals, including faculty, educational technologists, library professionals, and administrators. Registration is open until noon on January 18, 2023 and registrants will be notified of their acceptance into the VIVA Open Skills Academy by January 20, 2023.

The first is an E-Resources Librarian, who will work closely with the VIVA staff, member libraries, and committees to manage the standard collections renewal process and opt-in subscriptions by member libraries and provide e-resource access, management, and troubleshooting. The second is a Digital Publishing Coordinator, who will be an integral part of the VIVA program, supporting the VIVA Open Grant program and publishing activities of grant recipients, including developing a wide range of awarded digital publishing projects across institutions of higher education in Virginia.
