The Healthy Opportunities Pilot is an innovative new approach to supporting social needs that impact health by using Medicaid dollars to pay for services related to transportation, nutrition, housing and interpersonal safety. Impact Health leads WNC’s participation in HOP.

It's an initiative near and dear to our hearts here at MAHEC and part of a comprehensive strategy to integrate holistic and socially responsible practices into our healthcare delivery.

Community health workers see the impact of HOP firsthand. Here's what Richard Montgomery, a community health worker for YMCA of Western North Carolina, has to say:

"I was able to connect people who were coming home from prison to the HOP program. I delivered food boxes to these returning citizens who weren't eligible for food stamps. That was a big hurdle for a lot of people. Also it has helped many people in addiction recovery who were in need of food support."

In 1978, the first class of four Family Medicine residents graduated from MAHEC. The Family Practice Residency poster on the left includes photos of three of those class members: Dr. William Hamilton, Dr. Stephen Miller, and Dr. Joe Vanderwerf.

Recently, our CEO, Dr. Bill Hathaway, took one of MAHEC’s first Family Medicine directors, Dr. Dick Olson, and his wife Becky (also a former MAHEC employee), on a stroll down Memory Lane—otherwise known as the “Wall of Fame”—to view that poster and dozens of others picturing residents and fellows through the years.

On this Flashback Friday, here's a fun fact: Since our founding 50 years ago, MAHEC has trained more than 800 doctors, dentists, and pharmacists!
