Christina Proctor has traveled the state to interview farmers about their health, experience and needs. And she’s found that they need our support more than ever.
“What I’ve learned through my interviews is that our farmers are burdened not only with the responsibility to feed our entire population, but they are also cursed with the expectation to do it no matter the cost to their own well-being.”

A new study found that one in five U.S. farmers report binge drinking when they experience high levels of stress.
"There are drastic, traumatic outcomes associated with not being able to ask for that care, using alcohol to cope and then feeling hopeless,” said clinical associate professor and lead author Christina Proctor.

Earlier this month, Christina Proctor, clinical associate professor in health promotion & behavior, and graduate students Chase Reece (MPH) and Noah Hopkins (MPH/PhD) presented their research at the National Rural Health Association’s annual conference in New Orleans, LA.
The research team presented 3 oral presentations and two posters on their work aimed at building awareness about the mental health needs of Georgia's rural farmers and barriers they face for care.

A research team from UGA and Penn State has received a grant from the Gates Foundation to develop a groundbreaking model to predict measles outbreaks worldwide.
“We’re trying to predict risk up to 18 months in advance. This is the first known effort to generate national-level risk predictions for every country in the world. And if successful, the outputs of these tools can be used to allocate resources and prevent measles outbreaks before they happen,” said principal investigator Amy Winter, an assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at .

A new study by researchers at provides even more reason to add omega-3s to your diet. The study explored the role of "healthy fats" omega-3 and omega-6 in preventing disease and death.
“We found that a higher omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is associated with a greater risk of dying,” said Yuchen Zhang, lead study author and doctoral student in epidemiology and biostatistics.

The University of Georgia College of Public Health, founded in 2005, promotes health in human populations, protects the environment and prevents disease and injury in Georgia, the United States and globally through innovative research, exemplary education and engaged service.
Located on the UGA Health Sciences Campus, the College of Public Health is comprised of four academic departments and four research institutes. It currently provides graduate and undergraduate degree and certificate programs to over 1,000 students in the five core areas of public health: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health science, health promotion and behavior, and health policy and management, as well as programs in four specialty fields: disaster management, gerontology, global health and health informatics.
