Public Talk “Dealing with Difference: Learning to Develop Patience and Tolerance” - Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi - 08-27-24
Medicine Buddha Practice - Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi - 08-27-24
For tonight's public talk, Geshe Lobsang Tenzin will speak on "Dealing with Difference: Learning to Develop Patience and Tolerance". Every day we are confronted with people who are different from ourselves, perhaps even in our own families or workplaces. And all too often we allow differences in religion, political viewpoint, culture, age, gender, or personality to create conflict, resentment, or distrust. But Shantideva tells us, "Because sentient beings have some portion of the superb qualities of the Buddha, it is right to honor sentient beings for just that similarity." In this talk, Geshe-la will look at techniques we can use to develop patience and tolerance for others and thus lead to more positive interactions by acknowledging our similarities as well as our differences. For tonight's public talk, Geshe Ngawang Phende will speak on "Meditation on the Union of Emptiness & Compassion". According to Buddhist psychology, the two fundamental causes of our existential suffering are excessive self-focus or self-cherishing and self-grasping or grasping to a notion of an ultimately existing self. Meditation on compassion is taught to counteract excessive self-focus while meditation on emptiness-wisdom is taught to eliminate self-grasping. Furthermore the two are practiced in union such that one supports the other. Attend In Person or in the archives: https://bit.ly/DrepungVimeo

For tonight's public talk, Geshe Ngawang Phende will speak on "Meditation on the Antidote to Ignorance". Ignorance is a mental factor that has the characteristic of unknowing. It also includes minds that are not merely unknowing, but that actively misperceive reality. When we are under the influence of ignorance, we are unable to see the world correctly and as a result, we are also unable to act correctly. We thereby create many problems in our own lives and in the lives of others. Ignorance is, therefore, the main source of suffering in our lives. In this class, we will look at how we can deal with this mind by cultivating its antidote. Attend In Person or in the archives: https://bit.ly/DrepungVimeo

For tonight's public talk, Geshe Ngawang Phende will speak on "Meditation on the Antidote to Aversion". Aversion is a mind that focuses upon an unattractive aspect of a feeling, person or object. When it arises in our minds, we immediately feel unhappy and disturbed. Moreover, this emotion leads to other harmful feelings, such as anger and hatred, as well as to negative actions such as harsh speech. Aversion is therefore a very destructive emotion. In this class, we will look at how to overcome this very harmful emotion by relying on antidotes. Attend In Person or in the archives: http://bit.ly/DrepungLive
