Good afternoon, all! Today is our first Ally Tip Tuesday!
When you find out that someone you know is a part of the LGBT+ community, avoid asking the question “How did your family react to you coming out?” It can be a triggering question that is better left up to the individual to disclose at their own comfort level. Instead, try asking if they have a reliable support system!
And of course, everyone is different! Some people may be fine to talk about their family, but it’s best to approach the topic with consideration and respect! 😊
Happy Tuesday!

Support the Just Georgia’s Fight for Justice for Ahmaud Arbery!
Just Georgia is a collective of Georgia organizations, activists, faith leaders, attorneys and justice-seeking community members. They believe that the killing of Ahmaud Arbery was the result of decades of systemic harm against Black Georgians. They hold two truths: (1) that many in our communities want to see that the killers of Ahmaud Arbery are accountable for the trauma they have inflicted on an entire community and (2) that our contributions must better equip Georgians to respond to the multiple systemic ills inflicting violence on our communities on a daily basis.
Sacred Worth encourages our members to support this important work! https://www.just-georgia.org

So you want to learn about Juneteenth?
https://www.nytimes.com/article/juneteenth-day-celebration.html
So You Want to Learn About Juneteenth? On June 19, 1865, enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas, were told they were free. Now, 155 years later, people in cities and towns across the U.S. continue to mark the occasion with celebrations.
What Is Juneteenth?
Dear Sacred Worth members, we share with you part of a message from the Emory Graduate Student Government Association regarding Juneteenth. If you are able, we encourage you to participate in some of these worthy events:
Good Morning Emory Graduate Students,
More than 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, June 19, 1865 marked the emancipation of enslaved Black people in Texas. Juneteenth commemorates this day. To celebrate, the Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA), with support from the Laney Graduate School Council, is calling all graduate and professional students, faculty, and staff to check out local events being planned for this weekend, including:
1. Peaceful march on Juneteenth, 6/19, at 1 pm, starting at MLK Jr. National History Park and ending at Centennial Olympic Park. The march will be followed by a concert & voter registration event at Murphy Park, for which the organizers need additional volunteers. Contact [email protected] for information.
2. To get involved in something this weekend that is Emory-specific, Black Emory students and alumni, allies, and friends are organizing a peaceful demonstration at Emory Village on 6/20 at 10am. Contact .hills or on Instagram with questions.
Please see the attached [graphics] for more details. Remember to stay safe, stay hydrated, and wear a mask! Feel free to wear your Emory gear and make signs to show what our university represents, and to hashtag along with .

✨Happy Pride Month 🌈 Here are some tips on how to celebrate this month!
We stand with leaders protesting entrenched racism, injustice, and violence toward people of color in America. In this moment, we mourn specifically those lost to anti-Black state violence. George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Atatiana Jefferson. Tony McDade. Nina Pop. And countless others. Black lives matter. Black trans lives matter. Black q***r lives matter.
We are listening. We will not normalize systemic racism. We will not lose hope in the possibility of liberation. We recognize that the liberation of Black lives is necessary for our collective liberation. We are committed to action for the long haul in collaboration with community leaders.
We encourage our members to take action:
1) Donate to Just Georgia, a coalition fighting for justice for Ahmaud Arbery;
2) Read anti-racism resources at bit.ly/ANTIRACISMRESOURCES,
3) Hold Sacred Worth accountable to partnering with racial justice organizations
Welcome new students! The incoming Sacred Worth board members would love to connect with you over the summer. Send us an email and say hello✌️🏳️🌈
The Transgender Seminarian Leadership Cohort is a year-long program that is open to all seminary students who identify as nonbinary, genderq***r, gender nonconforming, and/or transgender. We hope that you will invite your students to apply to this program, which provides mentorship, community building opportunities, academic and theological reflection, and participation at retreats and conferences. Our next Cohort will begin in the Fall Semester of 2020, continuing through the Summer of 2021. Travel expenses, housing, and meals will be paid for all in-person gatherings.
Our Cohort meets remotely throughout the year and gathers in person 3 times: there will be a retreat in Tampa, Florida (October 23-25, 2020); participation at the Creating Change Conference in Washington DC (26-31 January 2021), and a final gathering at the Trans Faith and Action Network Retreat in North Carolina (August 2021, date TBD).
Due to COVID-19 and the uncertainty about travel, we cannot guarantee, of course, that we will be able to meet in person for any or all of the scheduled three gatherings. For many years we have conducted many of our meetings via Zoom and will continue to do so as needed.
Here is the link to the application: https://clgs.org/2020/04/cohort2021/ . The deadline for receipt of applications is 1 June 2020.

On this Trans Day of Visibility, we would like to offer this prayer from our friends at Transforming Hearts Collective.
Spirit of life and love that resides within and among us, we enter this moment with all that we are, with an open heart, and with a love for justice.
We hold in love and prayer all transgender people, so many of whom live under the weight of violence, fear, and intolerance. We hold in love and prayer all the ways that transgender people have survived and thrived in a hostile world. We hold in love and prayer all who recognize the significance of gender justice for all people.
We who believe in freedom will not rest until it comes. We pray for the dawn of a new day when the very humanity of trans people is no longer called into question or ignored. We pray that physical, emotional, and spiritual violence will come to an end. We pray that a spirit of compassion and care will fill us to overflowing, that we may have the capacity to listen, learn, and grow not only in our awareness but also in our willingness to act. We pray for teachers, spiritual leaders, social workers, lawyers, and all people who heed the call to support Trans liberation, Trans leadership, and Trans visibility. May they ultimately lean into the Light of truth and justice, offering hope to Trans and gender nonconforming youth and adults.
On this day, we commit and recommit to creating a world where people of all genders know peace, love, and justice. We commit and recommit to living lives of compassion and care for all of humanity. We commit and recommit to the healing work of relationship-building that will help every person know, no matter their gender or sexuality, that they are loved and valued.
We miss being able to meet with you in person, but in lieu of a Sacred Worth meeting on campus, we would like to invite you to join us in designing our next t-shirt!
You can submit designs created using any medium by sending a picture to [email protected] with subject line "t-shirt design" by 11:59 pm on Thursday, April 9th. These designs will then be sent out to the Sacred Worth listserv to vote and the winner will be adapted into a graphic design that will work on a t-shirt which we will then print and distribute!
We wish we could see all your beautiful faces in person, but for now we hope that you will join us in community and creativity while maintaining a safe distance.
