Such a fun Holiday party!
10 years and counting with my right hand girl and assistant extraordinaire. Aisha Armour, love you and couldnβt do it without you!!
We are so happy to add a new doctor to our Haven Ob/Gyn family!
Why do doctors do C-sections? Cesarean sections or a Cesarean delivery, commonly called a C-section, is when we make a cut on the abdomen to deliver a baby. The reasons for C-section vary and the purpose of this blog is to discuss my thoughts on why ...

Got my COVID vaccine! One step closer to being able to do the simple things- like shake hands and sit down in a restaurant. And finally burn that stinky N-95 mask!
We have a new website if you haven't checked it out... www.HavenOb.com
I'm not sure if it was clear in the original post, but the COVID-19 antibody testing is $99 for everyone, regardless of insurance. Call our office if you're interested at (770) 393-1988.
We now offer a blood test to see if you have had or been exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19 (called COV-SARS2). This simple blood test is done here in our office and only takes a couple days to come back. Although no one is completely sure with this virus, having these antibodies most likely means you cannot contract it in the future. If you are interested, please speak to our receptionist or call our office for an appointment. Due to the rapidly evolving nature of this pandemic, we have chosen to do this test outside of insurance.

Apparently there is a rumor that Dr. Bryan Jewell is leaving our practice. Not sure why it got started, but not true. Our core of Brad Moore, Leah Pombo, and Dr Jewell have been together for over seven years and going strong.
The end of an era. Ms. Cindy retires today. We'll miss you Ms. Cindy!!
Dr. Moore and Family Mushing a Dog Sled in Colorado
No, this is not me getting to work during Snowmageddon. We took a winter trip to Colorado in March and actually got to drive the dog sled. My kids love animals, so they were really excited.
This was shared with me and is worth posting. Placenta accreta is a rare, but very serious condition, where the placenta grows into the uterine muscle. This makes it difficult for the placenta to deliver after the baby and can cause life-threatening hemorrhage. I have had several cases end in hysterectomy, transfusions, and ICU stays. The biggest risk is previous uterine surgery and is becoming more common as C-sections become more common.
Hope for Accreta Foundation A non-profit organization that helps further the awareness of these conditions.
Haven Ob/Gyn is proud to support our Redhead friends (orangutans).

Vaccines: Get Vaccinated Against Whooping Cough While Pregnant - Pregnancy and Whooping Cough - CDC Pregnant women should get a whooping cough vaccine. Vaccines are the best way to prevent whooping cough.
We are now giving the whooping cough vaccine in our office. It's recommended for pregnant women around 32 weeks gestation to protect the baby from pertussis (or whooping cough). Of course it's optional, but we have it and recommend it.
Finally settled into the new office. For those who haven't seen it, it's beautiful. We even have a water wall flowing into a 10'x5' koi pond. I'll put some pics up soon.
We're moving! As we have grown, our little office just isn't big enough. Don't worry, our new office is just down the street from our current location and we'll still have plenty of convenient free parking. We haven't set a move date yet (probably April 2013), but we'll give everyone plenty of notice. Our new address will be: 4360 Chamblee Dunwoody Road

ps. I hear rumors of a water feature in the waiting room!
Someone asked me address the issue of delaying clamping the umbilical cord when the baby is born. Personally, I'm not a big fan of waiting. The proponents of waiting to clamp the cord say that this allows more blood to pump from the placenta to the baby and maybe helps with anemia. I've even seen a study that showed some benefit of that sort. The problems are many- first of all, blood pumps back to the placenta as much as pumps to the baby. Second, while you're waiting the baby has amniotic fluid in their mouth when their born and you're not able to fully address that with the baby attached to the placenta. And finally, babies are naked and wet when they're born- they get cold easily. If we wait three minutes for the cord to stop beating, they can get cold. So by clamping the cord soon after birth, we can put the baby on mom's chest, suction out any fluid in the lungs and nose, and wrap the baby in warm blankets (or even better, skin-to-skin). If someone feels strongly about waiting, I'll do it but for the reasons above it makes me uneasy.
We are two doctors and one nurse practitioner.

The Harmony Prenatal Test: a simple blood test to detect common fetal trisomies via directed DNA ana A safe, highly accurate, and affordable non-invasive DNA test that detects common fetal trisomies as early as 10 weeks with a simple blood draw.
One of our patients asked about the new blood tests for Down Syndrome available. This is BRAND NEW, so I don't have a lot of knowledge except what's available to everyone else. There are several companies offering these tests... I understand there is some legal action pending for patent infringement. We chose the same one as our perinatologists (high risk specialists), the Harmony test. It is performed by LabCorp, the largest and most reputable lab in the US. It is new, so it's not usually covered by insurance but hopefully will be soon.
The test is 99.9% accurate for Down Syndrome (a little less for related diseases Trisomy 18 and 13) and is performed on a sample of the mom's blood. It is very complex, but it detects pieces of fetal DNA in the maternal circulation. I was taught that there is no mixing of mom's and baby's blood, but apparently there is to a very minute degree. This test picks up those tiny fragments and can test for Down Syndrome.
It is usually a cash test (around $700) and so I don't make it "routine." I use it now like I would use amniocentesis- if the ultrasounds or traditional tests show a high risk for Down's, we do the Harmony test. I also use it on my patients over 35 who are considering amniocentesis. Of course anyone can do it, it's just expensive.
I hope this helps... a bit rambling, but very fresh information.

We've changed names! With the departure of Dr. Boulton and the arrival of Dr. Jewell, we needed a new name. I love the Haven restaurant especially their haystacks! It also has a nice meaning, like "refuge or shelter, a safe place."
We currently are offering the flu vaccine to all patients and family members. We highly recommend the flu vaccine for all our pregnant patients, since the flu is much worse when you're pregnant. Since your immune system is suppressed during pregnancy (so you won't reject the baby), you catch things easier and it's harder to recover. For patients with insurance, we will bill it through your insurance. For non-patients (husbands, family members, etc.) we charge the usual $25.

We have a lot going on at our little practice. Dr. Boulton bids us farewell on July 18 and Dr. Jewell starts July 11. Leah's husband is now home, but still has a little recovering to do. We are looking at moving to a new building (very close but bigger and fancier) and I will have to change the practice name. I was hoping Dr. Boulton would never leave when I named us Moore-Boulton Ob/Gyn. I like the name Haven Ob/Gyn. Any comments?
Prayers please for Leah's husband Mark. He is a race car driver and was in a bad crash last Friday. He had to be airlifted to the hospital, but is doing well now. Leah is still in Milwaukee with him. Please send good thoughts and prayers their way.
