Early Education Is More Demanding Than Ever, and Experts Have Concerns 01/28/2020

“While only 29 percent of the 2,500 teachers surveyed in 1998 thought parents needed to ensure their kids knew the alphabet before kindergarten, 62 percent of the 2,700 surveyed in 2010 thought so.”

Early Education Is More Demanding Than Ever, and Experts Have Concerns The approach, stress and rigidity that often accompanies modern lesson plans may cause young children to feel frustrated or disengaged.

Feeding children can be REALLY tricky! How can we do our best to keep them healthy and happy? How do we help them a create positive relationship with food and eating?

For mealtimes at The Nest, choosing our language very, very carefully is imperative. It can be incredibly difficult, however, for adults to shake off decades-old negative, damaging, and often false perceptions about food and eating.

We find keeping documents and research from nutritionists and psychologists VISIBLE really supports our journey of relearning. What helps you be a better advocate for children’s experience with food?

“Do you name foods ‘grow foods’ and ‘whoa foods’?” Someone asked recently. Actually, no I don’t. Because kids can actually grow quite well on "whoa foods." They have calories, they have nutrients. 🤔⁣⠀
⁣⠀
I like to be as accurate as I can with my kids at their age level. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Big Macs absolutely help kids grow. Soda absolutely contains energy, which can help kids grow as well. And then there are super "grow foods" like dairy, which really needs to be eaten in moderation, if at all. So, I’m personally uncomfortable with the idea of “grow foods” and not grow foods. ⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Instead, for preschoolers, I talk about what foods do in our bodies. I use actual nutrition principles and make a message that is understandable to a 3yo. Then I model “sometimes foods” in our family menu (but rarely discuss it). Here are my basic messages:⁣⠀
⁣⠀
🍞Sugary foods, grains - helps us move and run⁣, give us energy⠀
🥚Meat, eggs, beans, dairy (protein), nuts - make our muscles strong⁣⠀
🥞Coconut, avocado, olive oils and butter (fats) - help our brains think⁣⠀
⁣⠀
For fruits and veggies, I usually break it down by color. Although this is not accurate for every single veggie, I think it’s a good framework to get started. ⁣⠀
❤️ Red: gives you a strong heart⁣⠀
🧡 Orange: helps you see in the dark⁣⠀
💛Yellow: helps your body heal cuts⁣⠀
💚Green: gives you super powers to fight off sickness⁣⠀
💜💙Blue and Purple: Give you a strong brain⁣⠀
💟White: gives you energy⁣⠀
⁣⠀
Do you have a favorite nutrition message for your kids?⁣⠀

Photos from NAREA's post 07/08/2019

For three days at the very end of June four of our educators had the precious opportunity to participate in the 2019 North America Reggio Emilia Alliance Summer Conference right here in Atlanta! Can you spot one of our educators in the photos below?

The conference, titled "Defending Spaces for Creative Freedom: Spaces of Joy, Trust, and Solidarity," brought several hundred professionals from all over the world together to share alternative narratives in education. Over stories, videos, dialogue, and ateliers our passions re-ignited and our shared intelligence deepened. Above all, we're reminded of our commitment to affirm the rights of children through everyday declarations.

"It is the schools' problem to make it so all children become intelligent!"
- Claudia Guidici, president of Reggio Children, speaking at the conference on "The 100 Languages of Children"

Atlanta exhibit focusing on Italian preschool approach to open June 25 06/21/2019

“The Wonder of Learning” exhibit from Reggio Emilia, Italy offers an intelligent, thoughtful, inspiring view of children and childhood, teaching and learning, school and community. Whatever your relation to schools — parent, teacher, taxpayer, student, professor — the exhibit is worth a visit during its time in Atlanta. The Nest is happy to be a participant in Project Infinity, a group of schools in the southeastern U.S. committed to the study of Reggio Emilia, that has helped bring the exhibit to Atlanta.

Atlanta exhibit focusing on Italian preschool approach to open June 25 An exhibit focusing on the educational philosophy of preschools in Reggio Emilia, Italy, will be open in Atlanta on June 25.

The most overlooked reason why your kids won't listen, focus or sit still. 05/30/2019

“In order for kids to listen, focus and learn to sit still for a period of time, they must develop both proprioception and vestibular sense. The most critical time to develop a child’s proprioception and vestibular sense is before age six...

Proprioception is what tells you where your body parts are without having to look at them. This is the sense that helps you make sense of gravity. It’s the reason you can switch from the gas pedal to the brake without looking at your feet, or bring popcorn to your mouth without taking your eyes off the movie screen. Without properly developed proprioception, kids can push too hard during tag, fall out their seat at the dinner table, or trip while walking up stairs....

Vestibular sense provides information about where the body is in relation to its surroundings. This is the sense that helps you understand balance, and it connects with all the other senses.
When the vestibular system does not develop properly all other senses will struggle to function properly. Without a strong vestibular sense, kids will have no choice but to fidget, get frustrated, experience more falls and aggression, get too close to people when talking, and struggle with focusing and listening. Because they literally cannot help it.”

The most overlooked reason why your kids won't listen, focus or sit still. My son climbed to the top of the monkey bars and snaked across them from above. He's not strong enough to...
