Hi all,
We just sent out our summer e-newsletter. In it we share news about our summer volunteers, the grand opening of our second training center, and our wonderful staff in Guatemala. If you're not yet on the mailing list, you can use the link below to read about the inspiring work you're supporting.

Our second group of 9 volunteers delivered in so many ways this past week!
🌿🌱🌿
Working in Tecpán, Guatemala, our group was planting in chilly, rainy conditions. Still, the weather didn’t dampen their spirits as they rallied to plant nearly 1,000 trees for local families! They even got support from a couple budding agroforester apprentices - although one doesn’t look to happy about being out in the rain 😂
🌿🌱🌿
We welcome our third and final group of the season today, and look forward to what this next week will deliver!
🌿🌱🌿
Hosting our incredible volunteers often means 12+ hour days for our equipo AIRES (AIR team), with meetings and planning between tree-planting, stove-building, and school visits.
When we *do* find a bit of downtime, we make the most of it - as one of our fearless leaders, , demonstrates 😂

📍 At a local estación de bomberos (firehouse) in Antigua. In 2018, the volcano Fuego erupted, killing nearly 200 people. AIR supported local fire stations with supplies and donations as they worked tirelessly to respond to the disaster, and was awarded a humanitarian recognition by the government for our work. We continue to maintain close connections with the firehouses as key first responders!
📍 With environmentally-themed artwork from our scholarship students!
We’ve said our goodbyes to our first group of volunteers, and are excited to welcome our second group today. We’ll be starting our work just outside Tecpán, planting trees in a community near there. We’re excited for what this next week will bring!
🌿🌱🌿🌱🌿🌱🌿
This week officially kicks off with AIR Guatemala!
🌿🌱🌿
And with that, we’re excited to welcome our first group of volunteers - an incredible group of students from campuses around the country, including .edu 🙌🏼
They’ve been hard at work this week, planting over 500 trees and building 4 fuel-efficient stoves for families just outside Chichicastenango (yes, it’s one of our favorite places to visit *and* pronounce).
🌿🌱🌿
Tomorrow, they’ll have a well-deserved break at Antigua, before heading home.
Please join us in wishing a well-deserved felicidiades y gracias to our first volunteer group - we couldn’t do this without you!
🌿🌱🌿

This we’re proud to honor the women who make our work possible, from the indigenous communities where we work, to the leadership of our organization, and our Allie’s. Did you know that:
🌿 Nearly 70% of the community members and farmers who choose to work with AIR are women
🌿AIR was founded by a woman: Dra. Anne Hallum, a political scientist and long-time environmental advocate in 1993. Her daughters, Rachel and Rebecca, and their husbands continue to be highly involved in the organization.
🌿AIR’s director in Guatemala, .ramirez.h , has been with the organization for decades and continues to be instrumental to its growth!
During a time of ongoing divisiveness and violence in the world, AIR and the women behind it are testament to the power of building alliances across borders, grounded in a recognition of our shared responsibility to the planet - and each other

AIR Volunteers Helping to Cool the Earth AIR's Volunteers At Work We have heard—and felt—that July is the planet’s hottest month on record (174 years of record-keeping), with severe heat waves all around the world. If you're going to be in the Atlanta area on August 8th, we'd love for you to join us for a lunch and learn at Trees Atlanta where Anne Hallum, AIR's Founder, will be sharing information about AIR and teaching about reforestation. The event is free, but registration is required:
This we are so grateful for all our partners - near and far - who have continued to support our work through the years. Because of your generosity, we’ve planted over 8 million trees throughout Central America - and counting. Last year, we worked with indigenous communities to plant ~675,000 trees. This year, with your help, we aim to plant even more.
With so much negative news about these days, it can be easy to lose sight of all the many victories worth celebrating. But there are many - and AIR’s work is one of them. Thank you for being a part of it. We couldn’t do it without you.

AIR is starting off 2023 with a bang! 💥
Through the support of our generous donors, we’re excited to announce that we’ve officially broken ground for a new training center in Sololá! This past week, our founder Dr. Anne Hallum, along with Cecilia Ramírez and the rest of the AIR team including and some of our dear, long-time supporters, visited the site to celebrate the start of construction for this new center.
Having another site of operations in Sololá will allow us to expand our efforts to more areas of where trees are desperately needed.

We’re excited to share that we’ve been selected as a national winner for the 2022 Energy Globe award for our regenerative farming and reforestation program in Guatemala. This prize is awarded annually to projects saving our environment by personal action, sustainable projects or campaigns for raising awareness in sustainability. In 2022 more than 2,500 projects from more than 180 participating countries were evaluated by the Energy Globe Foundation and its partners, which include the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). A hearty congratulations goes out to our hard-working staff and farmer partners for the work they’ve done to make Guatemala more sustainable.

This Thanksgiving, we are grateful for YOU - each and every member of our extended AIR family - whose support has made 2022 one of our best years to-date. Through your kindness and generosity, this year we have been able to:
🌿 Plant over 200,000 trees throughout Guatemala and Nicaragua
🌿 Ensure the forests we plant continue to grow and thrive, as seen in the second photo of a 9-year old forest in Central Guatemala planted by AIR and maintained by community farmers
🌿Construct a record 16 fuel-efficient stoves, each of which conserve ~1 ton of firewood per year
🌿 Rebuild homes in Nicaragua that were destroyed by Hurricane Julia
Moreover, with your support we raised enough funds to build another training center in Panajachel, which will allow us to continue and expand our community-based reforestation work in this part of Guatemala !
So on behalf of all of us, THANK YOU. We look forward to continuing to celebrate these successes for the planet and the communities of and with you!

We’re happy to welcome our final group of volunteers this week for planting season!
Today kicked off with a site visit to Las Cruzes San Andres Semetabaj, a community where AIR worked nearly 7 years ago to plant ~600 native tree seedlings. One of the things we pride ourselves on is the long-term growth and sustainability of our community-based reforestation projects, and today it was remarkable to see that those seedlings have grown into a mature forest that is home to a myriad of bird species, while also improving soil quality and protecting against erosion 🌿🌲🌿
