VIP at Georgia Tech

The Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) Program unites undergraduate education and faculty research

VIP extends the academic design experience beyond a single semester, with students participating for up to three years. It provides the time and context to learn and practice professional skills, to make substantial contributions, and experience different roles on large multidisciplinary design/discovery teams.

We'd like to congratulate Stephanie Boulard on her research with Haikubox, which is a tool/app for recording birdsongs and identifying the species present. Students will be able to analyze bird call patterns and use this to study local ecosystems. She also leads a VIP team "Birds in Arts and Media" where students explore the role of birds in French and Francophone arts while addressing global issues like climate change through creativity and research projects.

We'd like to congratulate the Georgia Tech EcoCAR for placing second in Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions (AVTCs) EcoCAR EV Challenge! "I wanted to learn all I could about automotives, design and manufacturing, which I knew I would likely not learn in the classroom. What I found, though, is a tight-knit community of individuals highly motivated to work toward the same goal." says Mason Shackelford. As a part of the VIP Program, the EcoCAR team offers students like Mason the chance to gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge engineering, all while being part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team.

We'd like to recognize Daniel Molzahn on his Outstanding Teacher Award - Early Career. He leads a 30-student Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) team, Gaming for Electric Power Grids, that develops video game simulations of power grids operating during extreme events. In addition to his existing research on energy systems, Professor Molzahn is dedicated to educating the next generation of electric power engineers. A first iteration of the game is currently installed at the Georgia Tech Dataseum in the Price Gilbert Library, and plans are underway to incorporate a version into next year’s Seth Bonder high school summer camps. Georgia Tech's new GROWER VIP is creating the country's most comprehensive real-time power outage tracker for research use! The database will help researchers explore questions about the causes and effects of power outages and how policy interventions can help strengthen grid resilience. The database will also help researchers learn more about the causes of outages and their societal impacts, such as on housing prices, business activity, public health, and crime. It will also help them obtain greater insight into which communities experience the most frequent and longest outages and what can be done to help. We'd like to recognize Matthew Woodward as an Outstanding Mentor. Matthew said the following about their VIP experience: For me VIP is a place for students to get experience working with real-world projects instead of just theory. Additionally, it is a great opportunity to learn technical skills from older students when they first join and to practice teaching and other leadership skills once they have become the mentors.

04/04/2024

We'd like to recognize Noemi Carillo as an Outstanding Mentor. Noemi said the following about their VIP experience: VIPs have meant an opportunity to connect with people from different majors, something I'm incredibly grateful for as I've gotten new perspectives of how to work in groups and what people are interested in and why. Also, because my VIP is focused on equity and the built environment, my perspective of what sustainability means to them has grown. I've also had an opportunity to work with communities that I would've never had the chance to work with outside of my VIP and for that I am incredibly grateful. Community engagement is an incredibly important part of policy work and city planning but does not get sufficient attention in undergraduate studies, so this VIP provided a way for me, an undergraduate public policy major and a sustainable cities minor, to gain that experience.

04/04/2024

We'd like to recognize Gregory Lanier as an Outstanding Mentor. Gregory said the following about their VIP experience: VIP is a program that has given me opportunities to have a clear path forward in both my academics and career. As a first-generation university student and someone who transferred into GT, I was looking for ways to get deeper into the academic community past just my classes. Through VIP, I found a project where I could dial in the skills and knowledge that really interested me. This opened routes to a future career I would have never had (or even considered) without the program and has allowed me to exceed expectations in the internships I’ve had since joining.

We'd like to recognize Roy Gabriel as an Outstanding Mentor. Roy said the following about their VIP experience: Over the last 4.5 years, this VIP has served over 300 students with diverse backgrounds and origins. I have also played a significant role in forming a hierarchical structure to train new mentors and supervise them to ensure all students receive the attention they need. This experience has fostered my growth as a leader, mentor, and, above all, has bolstered my character. I look forward to future years as I continue to inspire future leaders and entrepreneurs in the fields of AI in medical imaging and finance.

04/02/2024

We'd like to recognize Rachel Paul as an Outstanding Mentor. Rachel said the following about their VIP experience: VIP has been both personally and professionally rewarding. Having a long history of tutoring, I love to teach and mentor students, and switching from tutoring over to a TA in a VIP setting has been very challenging and rewarding. I've learned many new skills, both in mentoring and technical, and have gotten to watch my students grow and accomplish so much. I'm so proud of the work they have accomplished and all they have learned.
