A friendly reminder that in zones 7/8, now is the time to prune your Macropylla (aka Mophead) hydrangreas. We suggest completing this task by August 1st to allow time for new growth to harden off before the first freeze or frost. (Doesn't a frost sound dreamy right about now?!) Speaking of the heat / drought- before pruning, the plant should be well watered the night before. Stick to just shaping the plant this year. Hard pruning should not be done in these conditions.
And don't forget - you can use the trimmings to propogate new plants. There are many methods for propogation - we suggest visiting YouTube to learn about options and try a few different methods to see which works best for you!

Reminds us of our recent speaker, Linda Cline, who bemoaned the long wait for climbing hydrangeas to bloom!
Schizophragma hydrangeoides ‘Moonlight’ — Japanese Climbing Hydrangea— took eight years before it bloomed, whether I fertilized or not. Some years it doesn’t bloom. This year it is loaded with buds. I’m convinced the extreme cold helped this plant. I would keep for the foliage anyone but still, blooms are a nice reward. Anyone else grow this?
Join us Monday, Feb 27th at the Atlanta History Center to hear the secrets to success described by Master Gardener, Linda Cline in ”Let’s Talk Hydrangeas” at 7:30pm!
A conversational format talk where members and guests can “get the dirt” on how to successfully grow a beautiful garden centered around hydrangeas. Topics covered will include planting, fertilization, watering best practices, diseases and treatment, pruning, and how to take cuttings of hydrangeas. Linda will show examples from her own garden, which was featured on the 2021 American Hydrangea Society Garden Tour, and will also give some design tips on how to incorporate hydrangeas into the garden.
Great advice on Panicle pruning!
For our local Atlanta area followers- our plant sale ends tomorrow! Be sure you get your order in for some unique Hydrangeas bred by Dr. Dirr! Click below for more details - local pickup only. You do not have to be a member to purchase plants.
If you’re wondering how to protect your plants from the incoming cold front- here are some great tips!
Join us tonight at the AHS Fall Meeting! 7pm speaker Pam Beck Atlanta History Center in McElreath Hall. If you can’t be their live, the meeting will be live streamed through the Atlanta History Center website.
Don’t forget to water your hydrangeas during this dry spell. Even though the hydrangeas are heading into dormancy, they still need water. Even more so if in containers. Happy watering!
