Emory University Staff Fest 2024 gives staff a chance to climb the walls and marvel at graffiti. More than anything, it was a big hit with the hard-working people who work in our clinics, classrooms, labs, and offices every day.

Congratulations to Dr. Hans Grossniklaus, a world-renowned researcher and eye pathologist who recently signed off on his 70,000th case. If you are doing the math, that's more than 350,000 pathology slides.

Emory Eye Center is happy to welcome Ariane Crabb to our team for the summer! Ariane comes to us from Toledo, Ohio, where she is earning her MD at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences (UTCOMLS) program. We caught up with her during her first week while she was prepping a Western Blot test as a part of her research work with Emory Eye Center researcher Sayantan Datta, PhD

Almost 40 volunteers helped our very own Ping Moore, OD provide free eye screenings for the athletes, disseminating more than 60 pairs of glasses, plus 20 pairs of non-prescription sunglasses. Special thanks to Emory Eye Center's Dr. Susan Primo, Dr. Alexander Leong, and Britton Smith who were a part of that volunteer team of providers.

Emory Eye Center is lucky to have clinicians who commit themselves to vision health both on the job and outside the clinic. On April 27, Drs. Jeremy Jones, AJ Leong, Jacquelyn O'Banion and Susan Primo raised more than $2,500 for Grady Health Foundation by forming the TeamGradyEyes cycling team which participated in the Move for Grady fund raiser. Dr. Primo bravely battled Atlanta traffic - completing a 20-mile intown ride - while Dr. Jones rode 62 miles (seemingly all into a headwind, per his report).

Thank you! To the children and families who have survived and thrived after receiving a diagnosis of retinoblastoma! You inspired the Emory Eye Center with your smiles, your dreams, your talent, and your resilience on April 27 when the Emory Eye Center held the 25th Retinoblastoma Kids Day.

Great people work at Emory Eye Center!
One of them is our senior administrator, Zirka Smith a featured speaker at the Association of American Medical Colleges in Boston. Her talk? "Great People Work Here: A Journey Towards Staff Belonging." Using surveys to map progress, Smith found that the Department of Ophthalmology's employee engagement scores improved by more than 50 percent when staff-led initiatives were implemented.
