Blue Heron Nature Preserve Executive Director Melody Harclerode, FAIA, MBA, LEED AP is one of only 5 African-Americans in a class of 152 architects to be elevated in 2018 as an American Institute of Architects Fellow. Melody was recognized for the local, regional, and national impact of her K-12 design education initiatives, design advocacy, writings and community programs.
A staunch advocate for architecture and the profession, Melody holds the distinction as Atlantaâs only newspaper columnist focusing solely on architects and architectural design excellence and continues to engage public and political leaders about the built environment. She has also been a champion for integrating architecture into K-12 curriculum, a leader in the community and the Institute. Her leadership with Discover Architecture has been shared with architects and allied professionals through innovative design education workshops led by her at art education conferences and at local, state, regional, and national AIA events since 2011. On the AIA Atlanta Board of Directors from 2011 to 2016, Melody raised the influence of the organization with political and civic leaders, developed innovative public programs with local and national reach, and institutionalized the importance of advocacy.
She has received numerous awards and appointments over her career, recognizing her innovation; commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity; and visionary leadership. Melody currently leads the eponymous nonprofit organization, Blue Heron Nature Preserve, Inc. (BHNP) to advance its mission of connecting people with nature across Atlanta.
Inspiring day as our Project Pipeline Co-Directors joined the Bill Harrison Foundation for a two-day workshop through Usherâs New Look Career Sparks Academy. Join us in celebrating our featured NOMAtlanta members for Womenâs History Month! Dyesha Holmes - My purpose in life is to help others see their full potential in life; finding purpose in who they are, what they do, and where and how they live. I would not be where I am today if it werenât for the strong women representation in my life. From my grandmother and mother to my mentors and champions. Knowing that there was, and still is, less than one percent of black women architects has been one of my core motivations to continue pursuing architecture and getting my license. I want to be a resource to help others reach their goals; to help empower women to further the movement of progress. In order for change to happen, we have to disrupt the status quo. In order for change to happen, we have to seek out different perspectives. In order for change to happen, we need more women at the forefront.

Join us in celebrating our featured NOMAtlanta members for Womenâs History Month. Starting with Taylour M. Upton! As a woman of color, my pursuits regarding the built environment remain centered around making space equitableâin both the local and global contexts. Expanding my network in and moving to Altanta (the âBlack Meccaâ), I have been fortunate to witness and take part in initiatives, such that with NOMAtlanta and AIA Atlanta, that support such. These pursuits eventually expanded to the national and broader fabric, as I became involved with the Black Women in Architecture (BWA) Network, marketing and planning and for annual BWA Brunch. The connections I have made through such opportunities have been invaluable to not only my exposure to others that strive towards ; it has showcased how such endeavors make a positive impact on women and people of color in the architecture profession, as well as in other arenas. The importance of fostering such relationship has helped lead me to work for a firm owned by a fellow woman of color, allowing me to gain first-hand accounts on how the field has become more inclusive, as well as the vast amount of work still required to make the profession and overall society truly equitable for all.

Inspiring a new generation of minority architects.
âNOMA Atlantaâs mission is to champion diversity within the design professions by promoting the excellence, community engagement, and professional development of its members.â
Who we are
Twelve African-American architects from different parts of the country met, some for the first time, during the AIA National Convention in Detroit in 1971. What these professionals recognized was the desperate need for an organization dedicated to the development and advancement of minority architects.
