“Today on Juneteenth, we celebrate the values of liberation and joy. I’m celebrating the Black leaders who have never stopped fighting for freedom. I’m celebrating all the Black mammas who are courageously raising the next generation. I’m celebrating the abortion providers offering life saving, compassionate care. I’m celebrating our vision for Reproductive Justice that represents a world where we can have children, or not, and live in safe and sustainable communities. It is the ultimate act of resistance to live joyfully as our full selves and that is the spirit of Juneteenth. There is still much to fight for as we seek full liberation, but today is for us and for our community.” - 🖤

Our community is long overdue for a discussion on accountability, especially when it comes to gender-based violence—we’re thinking of Cassie Ventura, Megan Pete, Drew Dixon, Dee Barnes and the many Black women survivors who have pleaded for justice. Our hearts break for the survivors who have been triggered seeing graphic videos of Black women being attacked or hearing diss tracks that use Black women as collateral damage. We fight for a world in which our lives matter and our bodies are protected. And to the thousands who suffer in silence, whose sufferings are mocked or traumas aren’t believed–we are with you.

Reproductive Justice insists on the intersectionality of our struggles, recognizing that issues like reproductive freedom, misogynoir and gender-based violence must be tackled together. Trusting Black women must be the norm, not the exception—because our liberation depends on it.

“Today, Florida’s dangerous six-week abortion ban goes into effect. Once a sanctuary state for abortion care in the South, this ban leaves Floridians with even less access to care and will cause ripple effects across the region. Six weeks gestation is before most people know they are pregnant. Now, pregnant people will have to travel even further from their homes to access the care they need and deserve.

The anti-abortion extremists supporting abortion bans do not care about our lives or our children’s lives. They just want to retain their power by controlling our bodies and our futures. We’ve watched over and over as abortion bans result in decreased access to any and all reproductive health care, increases in infant mortality rates, and greater economic insecurity in states across the country. Being forced to remain pregnant could have deadly consequences—especially for Black women, who are four times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy complications in Florida. Horrifying realities like this make us fight even harder. Because people will still seek abortion. And we will not stop fighting for Reproductive Justice.”

“To invoke Nina Simone’s infamous lyrics, it’s not just ‘Mississippi goddam,’ now it’s Arizona goddam too.

Today Arizona’s Supreme Court ruling upheld a Civil War-era total abortion ban. This ruling ignores the will of the people in Arizona and denies their bodily autonomy. It is also proof that our systems are broken. Medical professionals in Arizona can now be punished with two to five years in prison for providing an abortion. Criminalizing medical care is harmful not only to doctors, but to pregnant people and their support systems. Arizona’s law was originally passed in 1864, before the last slave in the country was freed and before women could own property. Abortion bans were never about health care, they were always about control and upholding white supremacy culture. We won’t stop fighting for Reproductive Justice—by any means necessary.” — Monica Simpson, Executive Director of SisterSong

“…We move as a movement anchored by many leaders of good conscience and community trust. We call for unity within the movement and ask for continued grace from those who support us as we counter injustices. With attacks from an opposition that wants to see our doors closed, we remain steadfast in our mission, particularly as we navigate one of the most hostile environments for Reproductive Justice. We are grateful for calls to grow and expand our work to achieve a global impact. SisterSong remains committed to showing up each day to achieve Reproductive Justice for the most marginalized among us–both at home and abroad.”

We know their agenda. Making abortion a crime is just another way for racist police and racist leaders to try to take away our freedom, control us, and cage us. The fight for bodily autonomy and abortion justice is a fight against white supremacy.

Join us in our fight - go to sistersong.net/abortionisrj to ensure that Reproductive Justice is our lived reality.
